Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to cease fire and start negotiations

The talks between Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov and Armenia’s chief diplomat, Zograb Mnacakian, lasted around 11 hours. Lavrov said that the warring parties had agreed to “declare a ceasefire from 12 October at 12 noon. hours for humanitarian purposes ”.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, confirmed to the AFP news agency that the ceasefire would take effect from noon on Saturday (11am Lithuanian time).

During the ceasefire, overseen by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the parties will exchange corpses and death prisoners and other people in their possession, according to a report read by S. Lavrov.

“The specific parameters of the ceasefire will be agreed separately,” the report said.

The head of Russian diplomacy also noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to start work on a territorial dispute over a lasting solution to Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Azerbaijan and Armenia … are starting meaningful talks to reach a peaceful agreement as soon as possible,” Lavrov told reporters. He added that the negotiations would be mediated by the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
