On Thursday morning, passersby who rushed to work near the Kaunas confluence could see the movement of fishermen. Shocked admirers gathered around a huge and strange find pulled out of the water by their friend.
During eastern fishing in the Nemunas near Kaunas Castle, an object floating in the water bounced off one of the fishermen’s floats and caught behind it. Unable to get rid of it normally, the fisherman was forced to dive into a flooded river and unhook from the hook. The extraction revealed that the catch was not similar in size or appearance to fish or any other aquatic life. Unaware of what he had found, the aide called the Environmental Protection Organization.
“At first I was very happy and then I was scared. Until now I had not seen anything like that and I thought it was a giant tortoise. The thing was hard, rough and similar to a shell. the canines, as well as the traces of scales and fins, I realized that I would have found the remains of an ancient beast, ”said fisherman Kęstas, who was suddenly found in the vortex of events.
The paleontologist scientist Metodijus Nastarauskas was invited to the site to inspect the find. He was also unable to immediately accurately identify this strange find. According to the scientist, at first glance, it resembles the skin of an unknown beast, much larger than the reptile found in these areas, and fossilized and probably very old in terms of surface structure.
“I have not touched it so much, I have only read in books and I have seen it in museums. Upon inspection, you can see that the find is a dislocation of the skin and belongs to the beast. The question of why and when it came out was very difficult to answer. Examination of the skin reveals, from its surface, that it is very old, perhaps 700 years ago. The appearance of the salts that crystallized on the surface of the body suggests that the animal’s living conditions were very humid: either it lived in water or in a very humid place and out of sunlight, perhaps in dungeons,
The bark skin excavation found at Kaunas was taken for a thorough evaluation. In the laboratory, it will be studied further by a team of scientists: historians, archaeologists, and zoologists. They claim that this event could open up new perspectives on the investigation of contemporary mythology in the city of Kaunas.
