As the cold air front covering the U.S. coastline passed through Canada and into northern Mexico, cold weather settled over much of the continental United States, with about half of Americans receiving cold weather warnings. .
Air temperatures have dropped significantly across the country, with only a few areas in the southeast and southwest avoiding severe cooling.
The cold air wave also brought heavy snowfall and lijundra, causing increased demand for electricity and power outages in some places.

The NWS has reported the emergence of a “vast and unprecedented area of dangerous winter weather” in which air temperatures are falling to record lows.
“Hundreds of daily high and low temperature records are and will be exceeded during prolonged polar cooling, and even some of the all-time low temperature records for February are at stake,” the weather service said.
In much of the area called the Southern Plains, which includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, air temperatures this year could be up to 25 degrees Celsius lower than normal at this time of year.
