The officer protecting the migrants at the Rūdninkai landfill was already on his way home when he received a call indicating that he should return to the unit urgently due to the unrest near the Seimas. Mr. Bagon and his colleagues arrived after the riots, around 10:30 at night.
“At that moment we saw the police, we saw many rioters who are standing on the road, endangering themselves, those around them, because the transport of officers is moving down the street. Our forces were instructed to go to the inner courtyard of the Seimas, but that possibility did not exist because the protesters blocked the territory. An order was received to get out of the official vehicles and vacate the area.
We went out, shoving, insults, provocations began. We have repeatedly and repeatedly warned people who acted aggressively, kicked shields and the like to stop illegal actions, to stand down, otherwise violence will be used. They became even more active in behaving aggressively, the stoning began. Pole flags also flew towards the officers, ”the official said at the beginning.
Online – with a broken hand
A stone struck M. Bagon’s left hand, he felt a sharp pain, but the idea of retreating from the line did not occur to him.
“You will leave the alignment, your colleagues will need additional forces, and that opportunity did not exist at that time. Nobody left the line, only after all we went to the medical institutions,” said the interlocutor at that time.
The officer only went to the hospital the next day because the pain in his arm did not subside in any way. There he was diagnosed with an ulnar growth fracture of the elbow, so he will have to spend at least a month in a cast. When asked how he could ignore the pain and continue his service with this trauma, Bagon replied, “Responsibility.”
“As long as you are alive and well, you don’t think about pain. He is just thinking about how to do his best job so that as few of our officials as possible suffer, so that no one gets hurt as little as possible, the official said. – If he leaves the lineup, his teammates will need extra strength, and that was not possible at the time. Nobody left the lineup, only after all we went to medical institutions. “
The riots seemed well organized
During more than two decades of service, M. Bagonas saw it all: he had to suppress the hooligans of Polish football and quell the riots that broke out in 2009 near the Seimas. When asked to compare the riots that took place on Tuesday and 12 years ago, the official said the crowd was much bigger this time: it circled on all sides, from the Mažvydas Library, Tumėno Street, the Žvėrynas Bridge.
“But in 2009 it seemed that the rioters were uncoordinated, everything was very chaotic. And on Tuesday it seemed that everything was organized, that someone was responsible for something, one spoke, urged, the other dribbled: he threw, broke, hit ”, he shared his impressions.
The officer got the impression on Tuesday that the riots were being prepared in advance because it was not only stones that were flying towards them.
“Brickheads also flew towards the officers, although there were only stones in that parking lot. It can be assumed that this was prepared in advance. Perhaps the most active rioters and instigators arrived willing not only to demonstrate and shout, but they came with the intention of assaulting the Seimas, attacking the officers, defeating them, ”said M. Bagonas.
The interlocutor added that even the aggression seemed well coordinated, the stones were fired at the same time as if it were an order and then suddenly stopped. Finally, a riot police officer also fired a powerful explosive device at the officers.
“From what I could hear, the officers injured the soft tissues due to the explosive. If people are standing with guards and are injured, you should be glad that the explosive didn’t explode while in front of people’s eyes. God didn’t. However, the explosion would have exploded among the unprotected and the consequences could have been catastrophic, “he said.
Two fires at the same time
Officials were forced to put out even two fires Tuesday night. At the same time that unrest near the Seimas was suppressed, migrants were also reported to riot at the Rūdninkai landfill. Therefore, a bus with VST forces from the parliament was also dispatched there.
“Exclamations were heard among the rioters: they are taking the members of the Seimas, let’s not leave them. Some of the people, even the women, seemed to be pregnant, she ran under the wheels to keep the bus out. And on the side where the rioters were, from the parking lot, a shower of stones poured out, smashing the windows of the bus.
In response to these events, we pushed criminals from the bus into the depths of the site. The bus left, somehow they stopped for a while, but the criminals did not retreat anywhere, ”said M. Bagonas.
“It was very uncomfortable when we were performing functions in the Seimas, we constantly wondered if our officials would not suffer in Rūdninkai. There are very few thoughts in my head, it does not matter to a god that any of us will suffer there, but fortunately no one there he has suffered more seriously, ”he added.
Psychological pressure
Not only stones, but also constant insults flew at officials near the Seimas. Bagonas remembered the screams, curses and demands of the rebels to defend them, not the Seimas.
“The psychological thing is that our Lithuanian citizens do not want to take any action, but when they see that officials and colleagues can and do suffer nearby and want to do their duty as best as possible, so that the innocent citizens who have just come to look at your around ”, said the interlocutor.
Working in such conditions is very difficult because rioters mingle with ordinary observers.
“You see that it is necessary to stop an active person who threw stones and bricks at you, but there are people standing next to him. You move dynamically with the group and the troublemaker backs off, so people can get hurt and do nothing. But from what I heard, those innocent people did not appear to have suffered, “said a VST official.
Still, Bagon noted that some of the bystanders later joined the riots, grabbing rocks and throwing them at the officers. In his opinion, the instigators, who became increasingly active, also contributed to this.
“Perhaps they feel that they will not be identified, they will not be punished, the instinct of the pack will be activated, they will also join. From what I could see in the images, they came, did nothing and then took a stone and threw it, ”he shared his observations.
18 officers were injured and 9 rioters were arrested
Finally, late at night, without the rioters dispersing and hearing the warnings repeatedly repeated to stop the illegal aggression, the decision was made to disperse the crowd and detain the most aggressive ones.
“Our functions were not only to protect the Seimas, but also to restore public order, to ensure that other uninitiated citizens did not suffer.” Without a tactical dispersal of the crowd, it was not possible to do so.
The decision was made to push the entire crowd to the gas station and stop the most active rioters and instigators, if possible. We regrouped, received a signal and took tactical action, the crowd dispersed and the most active rioters were arrested, ”said M. Bagonas about the end of the operation.
A total of 18 officers were injured during the riots near the Seimas: 12 police officers and 6 VST officers were injured.
26 people were arrested Tuesday night, all on suspicion of rioting, for which they face up to 6 years in prison.
Nine suspects were released by the court on Thursday because they could obstruct the pre-trial investigation.
