The officer who worked as the squad chief at the Marijampolė Correctional Center is suspected of supplying inmates with mobile phones, SIM cards, Internet modems, anabolic steroids and other items, reports the Department of Prisons.
The “supplier” of prohibited items was tracked down when officers from the Criminal Intelligence Board of the Department of Prisons explained how convicts serving a sentence in a Marijampolė correctional facility were acquiring possession of prohibited items.
During the investigation, information was received that the convicts were assisted by a prison employee. Criminal intelligence officers from the Department of Prisons found that a correctional officer was bringing prohibited items to one of the convicts in exchange for payment. The convicted offender also included his relatives in prison, suspected of handing over the prohibited items to the officer and paying for “services.”
After receiving information about the articles sent to the convicted persons through the employee, the officials of the Board of Criminal Intelligence took measures to prevent the crime. During the trial investigation, searches were carried out at the residence of the officer and his possible accomplices. In the place of residence of the official, elements of possible transfer of convicts were found: 5 mobile phones, SIM cards and alleged anabolic steroids.
Other procedures consisted of the seizure of items sent to the officer and access to the convicted, such as a large number of mobile phones, their accessories, Internet modems, food supplements for athletes, and 1,500 euros, which could have been paid to the officer as compensation. for work”.
An official from the Marijampolė Correctional Center was detained for 48 hours. He was accused of abuse of power. To do this, in accordance with article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania. 2 d. she is threatened with a prison sentence of up to seven years.
“With this operation by the Board of Criminal Intelligence we are sending a very clear message that no abuse will be tolerated and we will respond in principle to any case in which officials are tempted to profit from illegal activities. We want to encourage our employees to be intolerant of corruption and to ensure that we take all measures to protect those who work honestly from possible criminal impact, ”says Virginijus Kulikauskas, Director of the Department of Prisons.
The pre-trial investigation is organized and led by prosecutors from the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
