“Taking into account the information available on the problems of vaccine transport, the Office has made the decision to initiate inspections of the supply chain of COVID-19 vaccines currently available on the Lithuanian market: BioNTech and Pfizer and Moderna.” – said G. Andrulionis, director of IWT.
According to him, the Office specialists will find out if all the requirements set by vaccine manufacturers are met. G. Andrulionis pointed out that the BioNtech and Pfizer vaccine is special. It needs to be transported to medical facilities with extreme urgency, within a certain time, and stored at extremely low temperatures (-60 to -90 degrees below zero).
After reconstitution, the vaccine must be diluted and used immediately to avoid degradation of the active ingredient. Vaccine distribution companies must have special refrigeration equipment and staff must be trained. It is planned to check that the appropriate storage conditions for vaccines before vaccination are also guaranteed in vaccination establishments.
According to the IWT manager, the results of the study are expected in the near future.
