On Friday, the Seimas Board made a formal decision.

The extraordinary session is started by 50 parliamentarians from the ruling groups.

So far, it is scheduled to last one day. Only bills related to the migration crisis presented by the Government will be included in its agenda.

Parliamentarians will be asked to adopt amendments with extreme urgency, giving troops additional powers in emergency situations.

The proposed amendments would give soldiers the right to issue binding instructions for natural and legal persons, to prosecute and detain persons who do not comply with their instructions or suspect a crime, to temporarily restrict access to stop, inspect and inspect. a certain territory or local, vehicles, cargo, people, luggage, use special means.

Said powers would be granted to the soldiers by the Minister of National Defense upon a motivated request in writing from the President of the Government’s Emergency Commission and in coordination with the President.

Soldiers can be granted special rights for a maximum of three months.

Saulius Skvernelis, leader of the Seimas opposition, criticized the amendments, saying that they would basically allow three people to “introduce a state of war into the country even in peaceful conditions.”

During the extraordinary session, the Seimas will also receive amendments to the laws related to the construction of a physical barrier on the border between Lithuania and Belarus.

This year, more than 4,000 people crossed the border from Belarus into Lithuania. illegal migrants. That number is more than a dozen times higher than it was in 2020.

Lithuania has declared an emergency situation due to the increase in illegal immigration. The country’s officials take the position that the increase in migratory flows is an organized action of the Minsk regime against Lithuania.
