All about the burial rules: how many urns can fit in the grave, how to dig a hole or legally spread the ashes | Lifetime

For the polls, the 25-year term does not apply.

Project manager of the cemetery maintenance company Stebulė Darius Jakutonis He said that although burial is still more common than usual, the number of cremations is increasing.

“When I started working five years ago, for example, in the Karveliškės cemetery up to 10 urns of about 200 burials were buried per month. Currently between 40 and 50 urns are buried per month. Sometimes the burial method is adjusted by the fact that there is no longer a place for a coffin in the existing family cemetery, and it is not yet possible to bury it on top because the 25-year legal period has not yet passed.

It is much easier to bury the urn, you do not have to wait 25 years to bury it on top, you can bury it even after a week or a few days without restrictions and as many urns as fit in the grave ”, explained the interlocutor.

The required depth of the pit for the coffin is 2 meters, for the urns – one meter. It is true that many cemeteries now have columbariums, but they are not as spacious as the earth.

“If you are buried in a capsule containing ashes in a crematorium, you can place four of those capsules in a columbarium niche. If you want a larger, more beautiful urn, it can accommodate one or, at best, two. Therefore, people count as more economically viable.

If the family is small or the person is lonely, a columbarium may be suitable, but there is a growing trend for the whole family to take a single cemetery (1.5 x 2.5 m) and decide to bury all cremated relatives here, as these tombs can actually accommodate many urns, especially the first one burying it deeper. It is often more convenient for families to have the grave of all their loved ones in one place, it is easier to keep it ”, considered D.Jakutonis.

While it’s possible to hear all kinds of rumors about how much a graveyard place costs, the state provides it for free.

While it is possible to hear all kinds of rumors about how much a place in a cemetery costs, the interlocutor assured that it is free from the state, and the rumors may have come because people are saying the price with all the cemetery equipment. It is true that cemeteries are often equipped with neighborhoods with ready-made grave borders and paved paths. In this case, you will only have to pay for the environment installation.

For example, in the Vilnius Liepynė cemetery, the city municipality has set the following prices for a place in an already ordered environment: a place cemetery – 329 euros, two places – 505, three places – 614. the columbarium in various cemeteries range between 420 and 848 euros.

People dig holes in the same wells

Well digging services (both urns and coffins) range from € 100-200, so there are still cases where people want to dig a well on their own.

“There is no such insurance in the legislation. If people want to dig a hole themselves or don’t have the money for the service, we certainly allow it, but the coffin hole is rarely dug on its own, because it is still large enough. With a well urn, much simpler. However, said wish in any case must be declared, registered and signed documents to assume full responsibility for occupational safety. It is impossible to be arbitrary, we come to check if the well complies with the requirements, “said the interlocutor.

During the quarantine the funeral was postponed

According to the director of the Vilnius funeral home “Ritualas” Jolanta Sprainaitienė, cremation was particularly common during the quarantine, when restrictions were placed on various activities, including gatherings during funerals.

“There were also cases where people postponed the funeral: they cremated the deceased and left him with an urn to keep or take home. Suppose we have more than 20 urns left to store. Most of them are already buried at the end of Quarantine It is difficult to say how many urns are left with people at home.

If the relatives do not order a funeral service, we do not know where they keep the urns: at home or they take them to be buried elsewhere. The legislation establishes that the ballot box can be temporarily stored at home, but it is not defined what that temporary nature is. For example, we buried this summer in 2011. and 2014 cremated people. The ballot boxes were brought from home ”, said the interlocutor.

According to her, the tradition of cremation in Lithuania is still young, but several older people are already choosing this method of burial.

“With some older people, we even have previous contracts that indicate they want to be cremated. I think it has to do with practicality, especially if the family has no place for a funeral.

The tradition of saying goodbye to the deceased is also changing. In some cases, the body is dismissed and only then is it cremated, in other cases with cremated remains, “said the representative of the funeral services.

Ballot box prices range from a few dozen to a few hundred

Currently, the supply of urns is also very large, from simple metal, wood, ceramic, porcelain or biological, made of degradable materials. The prices of the ballot boxes range from a few tens to several hundred euros. They can also be very expensive if they are unique works by artists or decorated with Swarovski crystals. And even those urns are bought.

“I couldn’t claim that the cheapest (metal) urns are the most popular. Most people go for the wooden ones, and those who are concerned about ecology break down themselves. I don’t recommend building the latter on a single columbarium, it is necessary to choose the criterion of durability for such burial method, therefore, stone ones are the most suitable ”, advised J. Sprainaitienė.

Sprinkle with ash – ash field

Recently, another legal way to bury the remains has emerged: scattering the ashes in a special field. In Vilnius, this can be done at the Liepynė cemetery. This field was also installed in the Kretinga district.

“The legislation defined that the ashes can be spread in an ash field. There was no such need for a long time, but when we received phone inquiries a few years ago, we thought: why not? Thus, a small area of about 5-6 areas, sown with grass and planted with yours, appeared in the Liepynė cemetery.

The burial of human remains in an ashes dispersal field is considered a legal burial, recorded in the cemetery records, that is, all the usual documents must be presented: death certificate, application and time when this procedure will be performed. However, only 6 ballot boxes were scattered during the year, “said the head of the public services subdivision of the Vilnius city municipality Judita Nauckuvienė.

However, according to the interlocutor, Lithuanians are more likely to bury the urns in the ground or leave them in columbariums. Because scattered ashes do not mark a place, no memorials are erected, and you usually want to have a place where you can plant a flower and candle to commemorate. According to the representative of the municipality, 10-15 years will definitely be enough in the Vilnius cemeteries (both in free territories, only in payments).
