Virginijus Šeškus fulfilled his mission in Jonava.

The veteran helmsman of the Prienai club who landed in the NKL and symbol of this city with his teammates in the Jonava club triumphed in the second basketball championship in the country in terms of ability and had the opportunity to debut in the strongest LKL.

Since the beginning of the season, the Jonavis, who spoke of high goals, dominated in the regular season (24-4), defeated Šilutė 3-1 in the quarterfinals, and in the decisive duel of the season they justified favorites with a stack, even crossing Telšiai 100: 66.

On Tuesday, Jonava received an official invitation to obtain the LKL license.

“In accordance with all procedures, an invitation from LKL was sent to Jonava today (Tuesday). The club must provide a response before Monday on whether or not they wish to apply to participate in the LKL licensing. That is the situation.” 15 minutes said RemKijus Milašius, President of LKL.

“This is not Prienai, so I can answer all questions,” he smiled about plans to move to LKL with the team. 15 minutes Jonava coach Virginijus Šeškus replied. – I think there are such intentions, that’s why we made this project to play LKL. But you have to ask the municipality, it is the main sponsor of “Jonava”. Much will depend on it. “

The last team to leave LKL is Mažeikiai, who won a ticket to the strongest league in the country in 2014, but remained the last of the season and a year later had to reload their bags and go down to NKL.

From that point on, the country’s clubs were preserved for six years, when last place in the tournament meant as much as, say, sixth place.

Although with the triumph of Jonava in the Lithuanian club basketball heaven, the long-awaited changes occurred, but the president of LKL suggests not to rush.

“Remigijus Milašius does not decide that, the board chooses the path. But I, as a conditional coach, want to say frankly: the season goes, but it does not go as before. The teams leave two or three times a season due to illness, the players fall ill, followed by a long recovery. Sportingly, this season has been challenging. We will fulfill the season as well as the commitments with the sponsors, because if we stop the championship, it would be very difficult to recover it in the future. I would suggest a ten-team tournament, at the that the eleventh team would contribute if Jonava expressed a wish. There could be twelve teams in the next LKL season. We’ve had eleven teams before, then one team had to rest for the weekend. With the new team in the league we should change the system of tournaments, the number of laps “, 15 minutes said the president of LKL.

Everything will be decided on April 28, and if there are doubts or doubts for the clubs, R. Milasius will open on May 14 last.

The last two games of the LKL regular season are scheduled for May 10, the board’s decision on the fate of the last team at the round table may be made after the end of the regular season.

Currently, the last place in the LKL is held by Kėdainiai “Nevėžis”, and “Šiauliai” has the same number of victories, but the latter have played two fewer matches.

The Kėdainiai club have nine games to play.

The decision on the format of the new season and the number of teams will be made in the board of directors by the leaders of ten clubs, the president of the league Remigijus Milašius and the general manager Romualdas Brazauskas.

“I’m not saying there really is an eleven-rig, three-wheel model. Can be anything. Maybe someone on the teams doesn’t have the finances, maybe someone refuses to participate. We still don’t have a response from Jonava. But I will make such a proposal, and clubs can vote differently, said R. Milasius. – I suggest looking at the situation in a humane way, it is necessary to understand the clubs, after all, there is a pandemic, it is not that someone likes it or does not like something. You need to look at the situation in the clubs. They have been creating, doing it for so many years, maybe someone has failed, more people have gotten sick. I look from the side of humanity, I don’t just take and cut everything. But up to 28 days, the teams are audited. They will have to provide figures and material on the situation of these clubs, and then we will look. “

The licensing of LKL clubs in the spring is a new wind in the league, changing the previous order when the clubs were inspected in July.

“A precedent has been set, because the teams do not know if they will pass their licensing or not, they will have finances or not. We announced the license maybe July 5, and the teams were already buying players. What if we block the entrance? The teams would be left with contracts and problems. We have teams that begin to be assembled even in May. Therefore, we have changed the order. We may not see the exact numbers as the season closes, but the order has changed with us, from new year to new year, and not like it used to be, from season to season, ”said R. Milašius.

If all of this season’s LKL teams and NKL champion “Jonava” will have the opportunity and desire to compete in the 2021-2022 season, then R. Milasius will offer an eleven-team, three-lap model, thus reducing the number of regulars. season matches from 36 to 30.

The last time an eleven-team championship was held was in the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons.

For the first time, Kaunas “Žalgiris”, Vilnius “Lietuvos rytas” and Klaipėda “Neptūnas” ran onto the court in just two rounds – 20 games due to playing in the VTB United League and European tournaments on the home front.

In season two, all teams had to play four full rounds and 40 games.

Due to league commitments to sponsors, the two-wheel system is not being considered, but the three-wheel system is very real. What about the third round of the regular season, will the venue be decided by lottery?

“It just came to our notice then. We sorted this out at the board meeting. When we talked about it with” Žalgiris “earlier, they didn’t object, because they would have a smaller number of matches. They said they can also play on trips. They don’t watch any. problem. What about the other teams? The men sit at the table and find various compromises. We were never angry or consoled. We will definitely solve everything, “said R. Milašius.

Two months ago, Remigijus Milašius revealed on the urBONUS website that he was negotiating the resumption of the BBL championship, which has recently taken place only between the Latvian and Estonian leagues.

Like now 15 minutes said the LKL president, no agreement could be reached.

“There were two or three matches, everything went well, but the Estonians joined in and everything stopped. When all you had to do was shake hands, everything went wrong. They have a joint championship, they have a joint sponsor. It all ended because of that. Latvia and Estonia have few teams, ours are getting stronger, they thought that the championship could have a negative effect on them, they would lose the sponsors they have today ”, said R. Milašius.

But he did not rule out the possibility of returning to this idea, only with new countries, whose head of LKL has not yet revealed.

“We have other ideas. I don’t want to talk about them today. A number of financial issues need to be resolved and we may present them to the public at some point. There are other countries, negotiations are under way,” R. Milašius mysteriously hinted.
