In the “Delfi diena” program, political scientist Rima Urbonaitė says that the best way to start is not from the Seimas, but from self-government, where it would be possible to start learning the subtleties of politics.
“Today, there are actually two proposals in the Seimas. The first is to change both the Constitution and the age (for 21 years), and now there is a proposal for 18 years. Initially, I wondered what would have happened if I had found myself in the Seimas when I was 18 years old, I already knew the subtleties of the work of the Seimas, the complexity of the work of the Seimas, and I said to myself that no, although I was not interested in politics, I was active, but it seems to me a difficult task.
I think the preparation for the Seimas should be very precise. Even now, I am not fascinated by what happens when people, even though they are no longer young, come without preparation. We should think of some things. First, we can give that so-called place in self-government to young people where they can learn politics. Another thing is our civic education in schools. If we had it good enough, perhaps we would have a different disposition from people to get involved in politics. And today that level does not satisfy me. Today I am skeptical about this idea ”, says the political scientist.
You want to talk about youth issues
Lukas Stravinskas, president of the Liberal Youth of Lithuania, says that such amendments would allow young people to speak louder about the problems facing young people.
“I think it is not too early because we have this practice in the European Union. Even in 16 states, 18 year olds can run for the Seimas. I agree that the development of our citizenship is not something that would prepare students for everything in school, but we must not prevent young people from evaluating themselves.
It should be said here that applying at an earlier age would allow young people to show problems that are specifically relevant to young people facing a young person. It certainly would not happen that ten 18-year-olds suddenly appeared in the Seimas after the elections. Maybe there would be one or the other young person who was not allowed by the Constitution to run before, but because of the amendment, people would have the opportunity to run and prove themselves, ”says L. Stravinskas.
Do not agree with the proposal
A member of Seimas Rimantas, Jonas Dagys believes that people of this age do not yet have the necessary experience. According to him, work at Seimas is not limited to ratifying decisions.
“What do we expect from our Seimas? People really can’t imagine that job. If we adopt more than 1000 regulations in one session, and understanding them requires some experience. In addition to legal, life experiences.
The fate of our people depends on those votes. If we believe that Seimas should only ratify government resolutions, so be it. I don’t like just one argument: gaining experience in the Seimas.
Decisions are made in Seimas, on which the fate of the people depends, and this requires preparation. Of course, there are people who are very talented, but in general, 18-year-olds still don’t have that experience, “says the politician.
He spoke about the censorship of education.
When Urbonaitė asked us if we should talk about additional censuses, such as knowledge and education, the political scientist assured that in this way we would create too many secondary factors that would cause a lot of noise, but not quality.
“I think it would make a lot of noise. After all, that higher education is what we are talking about, in what field. There would be a lot of differentiation, all kinds of reservations. After all, we are talking about representative power.
Of course, there is a certain ornament that it may be necessary to pass the exam first, so that the Constitution, the political foundations, and only then can they reach the Seimas. In fact, we see a paradox: if we ask all Seimas members today what the budget is like in Lithuania, the question is how much exactly do they know and get caught up in.
As for the various legislative texts, even now some of them are written in a very unprofessional way. For example, explanatory notes that require another explanatory note. Sure, there are a lot of challenges, but if we start playing with the additional censuses, it can be challenging enough, we can play. So there would be many side effects that will not contribute to quality. In my opinion, two things can contribute to quality: raising the cartel of political parties (…) and educating the public, where we do not invest enough, “said R. Urbonaitė.
Candy before the election
R. Urbonaitė also believes that this vision of politicians towards youth is like a kind of sweet before the elections.
“It is very strange that young people are remembered only before the elections. We see such a trend. It is as if it were trying to say that young people care about us, but it is not really thinking about young people having a generation that becomes politicians Serious people who can work in a very professional way, because now it seems that not only the 50-year-olds feel that responsibility, they are younger.
I think you can see here the attempts to remember by speculating, of course, that this is important to young people, but it should be considered more broadly, not just throwing candy. Young people must be seen at all times, not just before the elections. Then they will become something that will really create a state ”, considers the political scientist.
