After the hunt in which the bison was shot, Mažeika’s promise falls

According to the 15min portal, the minister promised that the decision will be implemented before October 15, but so far little progress has been made, procedures have been initiated only for three areas.

The hunt in which the bison fell took place in the Krekenava-Naujamiestis professional hunting area, one of 21 supervised by the State Forestry Company at the time.

About a month and a half after the incident, the Minister of the Environment announced that the SFE would abandon all professional hunting areas before October 15. They regulate animal populations and develop hunting tourism.

However, according to the portal, the State Forestry Company still has 18 plots left and as a consequence, it has not started any procedure before the Department of Environmental Protection for its abandonment.

According to the Minister of the Environment, K. Mažeika, it was not possible to present the area for auctions quickly because its documents have yet to be fixed.

“We have seen that it is impossible to do everything in a few months, because there have been no documents and area limits for many years,” the minister told the portal.

“Let’s be honest, someone from this was living well and had some kind of tool to influence, even politics,” he added.

Minister K. Mažeika also explained that there is no need for an electronic registration system for hunters, because the areas themselves will not remain long-term yet. A decision on the publication of hunting sheets on paper, according to him, is also not necessary, since the state areas are being abandoned.

Simonas Gentvilas, a member of the Seimas Environmental Protection Committee at the time and a representative of the opposition liberals, claims that the minister did not really seek any change. “I think the minister just didn’t do anything,” the politician said.
