Up to 10 people can attend the funeral during the quarantine, but the local does not hide that the deceased was accompanied to the cemetery by at least fifty people: “I did not count, but more than 50 did. – At least 50? “Maybe more, maybe 70.”
When information surfaced in the public sphere that up to a couple hundred people could have gathered to accompany the hospital director on an eternal journey, the police launched an investigation to see if quarantine restrictions had been violated during the funeral.
“We discovered this information yesterday,” says Audrius Lukošius, the Šilalė district police chief. “We have therefore taken the initiative and recorded this information in the police incident log. Now we will see if it was a crime.”
The municipality says the longtime hospital director was highly respected by locals, but it did not believe that large numbers of people would be able to attend the funeral.
“I cannot answer how many people there were that day,” says Tadas Bartkus, deputy mayor of Šilalė district. “I take this situation quite negatively, because I think there should be the same rules for everyone and the authorities should respond accordingly, be it a hospital director or an ordinary person.”
Local authorities admit to having attended the funeral themselves.
“I personally went there that night to honor the memory of this person,” says T. Bartkus. – We left, because there were a lot of people, we had to queue. Due to the restriction, it was necessary to wait no more than 10 people in the hallway. “
People say that the coffin of the deceased was also brought to the church.
A police investigation should find out if more people attended the funeral than the law requires. In addition to close family members and service personnel, a maximum of 10 people can attend the funeral inside.
