After the defeat of the peasants, Sabatauskas was confirmed as vice president of the Seimas

After it became clear that A. Norkienė had not obtained the required number of votes to become vice president of the Seimas, the president of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen had been in contact with the opposition factions for half an hour.

And another candidacy was presented for the Vice Presidents of the Seimas. This is the Social Democrat Julius Sabatauskas, his candidacy was recorded in the draft resolution.

During the secret vote of his candidacy, there were 77 members of the Seimas, 31 against, 11 abstentions. Two ballots were invalid. This means that LVŽS is left without a vice president.

Proposed unanimously

After J. Sabatauskas’ presentation, the Seimas Spokesperson explained her decision.

“It is my prerogative to choose a candidate. The LSDP faction unanimously expressed their opinion on this candidacy,” said V. Čmilytė-Nielsen.

He said that the largest opposition faction would be represented by an opposition leader.

And if J. Sabatauskas is not approved, the candidates presented by the factions will be evaluated again.

“This proposal is not only an opportunity for me, but also a great responsibility, I am ready to accept it,” J. Sabatauskas told the Seimas members.

J. Sabatauskas affirmed that the legislative process will be democratic, all opinions will be respected.

J. Sabatauskas had to answer how he would have behaved with the candidate for vice president of LVŽS.

“A faction that includes the majority of the minority of the Seimas may have an opposition leader. And it compensates for all those things,” said J. Sabatauskas.

The farmer Giedrius Surplys called to vote against. He said that if the Seimas did not approve of this candidate, the opportunity would arise for LVŽS representative Jonas Jaručius, who, following the decision not to approve the peasant Aušrinė Norkienė, was raised by a peasant faction.

Delphi recalls that after a secret ballot, it was clear that the Seimas had approved only 3 new vice-presidents of the Seimas. Only the peasant representative A. Norkienė did not get the necessary votes. 57 members of the Seimas voted in favor, 47 against, 29 abstained.

97 MPs voted for R. Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, 26 against and 9 abstentions.
