After scandalous statements about the United States, the Estonian minister withdrew: nobody can shut me up

“Last night, seeing the slander and lies of the Estonian media, I decided to resign,” Helme said.

“The reason is very simple: no one can shut me up,” Helme said. “I say what I think is right, what is in my heart.”

“In order not to jeopardize our referendum, I have decided to resign,” he said, referring to the referendum on the definition of marriage scheduled for next spring, on which the leaders of Estonia’s ruling coalition signed a joint statement last month.

Helme added that she would continue to work in parliament.

Helme’s homophobic comments in October sparked dissatisfaction among many politicians and public figures, as well as sparking a crisis within the ruling coalition itself. Prime Minister Yuri Rat has criticized Helme’s remarks and opposition leaders have called for the minister’s resignation. A little later, the prime minister said that the government crisis was over.

At the time, Helme and Finance Minister Martin Helme said on the radio Sunday that the US elections had been rigged and that the winner, Joe Biden, had been corrupted.

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said she would convene the Defense Council in the coming days for such a speech.

“The verbal attack against the newly elected US president by the Estonian Finance Minister and the Estonian Interior Minister today is an attack on Estonian democracy and security,” the president said in a statement on Sunday.
