However, it did not reach the minimum concentration limit, i. and. Oxygen deficiency in the water is not recorded, according to a report released by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The dissolved oxygen concentration of 5.7 mg / l O2 was determined in the water samples taken on Druskininkai in Nemunas, while in Nemunas water near Druskininkai village (Raitininkai sen., Alytus district municipality) reached 6.3 mg / l O2. The legal limit value is ≥ 7 mg / l O2, the minimum concentration is 4 mg / l O2. These studies show that the concentration of oxygen in the water is below the limit value, but did not reach the minimum critical limit, which is of great importance for living aquatic organisms.

During sampling, the water temperature in Nemunas was approximately 20–21 oC, so the decrease in oxygen in the water may have been caused by the high temperature of the river water. The higher the water temperature, the less oxygen dissolves in it.

Results from other studies such as nutrients, organic matter based on biochemical oxygen demand, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, chlorophenols, polychlorinated biphenyls are slated for early next week. Additional aquatic toxicity studies will also be conducted.

On Sunday, Belarusian naturalist Dmitry Vinnyevsky shared photographs of fish and other living bodies, and his recording was also shared by the Directorate of the Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve.

Her boss, Arūnas Pranaitis, said she did not doubt the authenticity of the photos.

“He often sends us information about the situation in Grodno County. This is important to us, because this phenomenon can also affect us. This is a trustworthy person. I have no doubts about those photos,” said the head of the Reserve of the Biosphere of Žuvintas to BNS.

He also stated that he has not yet noticed smothering fish in Lithuania, but that the short distance from Grodno to Lithuania is worrying.

“I was struck by the fact that we do not see suffocating fish anywhere in Lithuania. But we are concerned that it is very close to Grodno, and the distances from Grodno to us are short,” he said.

There have been isolated reports in the Belarusian media of massive fish and other creatures observed by fishermen in Grodno.

The adviser to the Minister of the Environment, Justas Jaskonis, told BNS that if the investigations show contamination, it is planned to seek clarification from Belarusian specialists.
