“Commercial fishermen should not abuse fishing, harm fish, catch only fish of the allowed size and only in authorized areas. The publicly recorded actions of enterprising fishermen pose a serious ethical responsibility in these activities,” says the Minister Simonas Gentvilas.
The video shows that businessmen and fishermen sailing on a speedboat not only catch potentially unauthorized catches, but also throw the fish themselves to the public figures who film them.
“We are initiating a thorough investigation to learn all the circumstances of the incident and then we will take appropriate action,” said Raimondas Sakalauskas, Acting Director of AAD.
The AAD notes that disagreements have arisen in the past between recreational fishers and those engaged in commercial fishing. In this case, the behavior of the fishermen as seen in the video casts doubts on the permissible use of natural resources.
In accordance with the Procedure for Commercial Inland Fishing, inspections of gillnets and longlines, other gillnets, viable prohibited fishing, and unauthorized fish must be returned to the stock.
The fishermen were caught by members of the non-governmental organization Salmon Diary.
“They don’t like our daily observation and guard duty in the Curonian lagoon, which prevents fishermen and businessmen from collecting illegal-size fish. There are cases where fishermen setting traps full of illegal-size starlings come across them, where a wave of bad words and a wave of fish are launched.
This only confirms that the Department of Environmental Protection has not worked at all for several years. These people feel unpunished, the only owners of the lagoon, the members of Diario del Salmón shared on their social network account.
