Currently, the average speed in Lithuania is observed on 25 road sections.

However, the works have started and by the end of the year another 100 average speed meters will be available and operational on the roads, covering 50 more sections in which the average speed will be measured.

In addition, as Viktor Lapin, advisor to LAKD’s Department of Traffic and Environmental Protection, told Delfi, procedures have been initiated for the purchase of 112 more average speed meters.

These meters are expected to appear on roads next year and will be installed on 56 road sections where average speed control is required.

As explained by V. Lapinas, when the equipment installation works are completed, there will be 800 km of roads in Lithuania where the average speed will be measured.

The locations where the new average speed meters will appear were not randomly chosen. The number of accidents, traffic intensity and other parameters are important.

Will appear in important places

Average speed is scheduled to be measured on the Vilnius-Utena highway, which was dubbed the most terrifying highway in Lithuania. Meters will be installed here at kilometers 37 and 43 of the road.

This is not the only passage. Average speed will also be measured at 85 and 92 kilometers on this road. It is at these marks where the speedometers will be located, which will record the vehicles entering and leaving the section and measure the speed.

The Vilnius-Varėna-Grodno highway received special attention. This road has long been known as extremely accident prone, so there will be up to three average speed measurement zones. The speedometers will be built at kilometers 106 and 121, 33 and 43, 78 and 85 of the highway.

Speed lovers who think that speed limits on Lithuanian roads can be ignored will also need to be more careful when driving from Vilnius to Panevėžys and vice versa. On the A2 highway, average speed meters will appear at kilometers 110 and 121 of the highway. Also at kilometers 121 and 126 of the highway.
