The Ministry of Transport and Communications has promised to find real opportunities to help Klaipeda implement the most important infrastructure projects.

Intends to act

During the remote meeting of the heads of the Klaipėda city municipality with the Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis, issues relating to the most relevant infrastructure objects of the port city related to the activities and development of the seaport were discussed Klaipeda State.

The minister pledged to take measures to ensure the smooth implementation of major infrastructure projects necessary to ensure the development of the current port and the southern port to connect with public roads and reduce the negative impact of transportation on citizens.

“The tone and content of the conversation, which was attended by the direction of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, was formal and benevolent. After listening carefully to the position of the city, it is hoped that these constructive conversations will turn into solutions that are necessary not only for the city, but also for the state, ”said Klaip alcalda City Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas.

Recall of collected signatures

In the first place, the issue of the development of the railway junction in the Melnrage-Giruliai forest was again discussed with the representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, for which almost 15 thousand people expressed their will at the end of last year. Klaipėda residents who oppose the extension of the Pauostis railway line here.

It was noted that for any development of transport infrastructure in the northern part of the city, it is necessary to assess the position of the population, which is unconditionally supported by city leaders and the city council.

“We have heard a very clear and forceful message from the Minister that there are really no decisions on the development of the outer port and they are not planned in the near future, so no related infrastructure development can be discussed. Even more so because we have a strict position on this issue, based on 15 thousand. with the signatures of Klaipeda residents, ”said the mayor.

The planned money will not be enough

The issue of rebuilding Avenida Baltijos was also discussed with the Minister of Transport and Communications and his team.

It was agreed in the position of common value that the construction of the flyover on Avenida Baltijos should be considered not as a city street, but as a transport corridor of international importance.

The Ministry representatives are expected to keep their promise to seek additional funding opportunities, so that instead of this year, the reconstruction of the intersection of Baltijos Avenue, Vilnius Street and Šilutė Road is planned for 7.5 million LTL. (previously 11 million euros), which clearly will not be enough, it would be more.

Representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications assured that in the second half of the year additional opportunities will be sought to successfully continue one of the largest construction projects in the port city in recent years.

The issue of a study by railways on the reduction of freight traffic through the central train station and on the prospects for rail infrastructure in general was also discussed. The city will participate in the presentation of this study and will express its position and expectations.

Will pay the debt

M.Skuodis was interested in the relations between the city and the port. The conversation highlighted the disproportion between record cargo handling at the port last year and record port financing for infrastructure projects in the city this year.

While the Minister draws attention to this gap, it is expected that solutions will be sought so that the city is interested in the success of the port.

During the conversation, it was discussed that the port law currently in force, in some cases, joins a more flexible contribution of the port to infrastructure projects that are very important to the city.

There is hope that the law will be improved which, according to V. Grubliauskas, no longer meets current expectations and challenges.

The mayor of Klaipeda and the heads of the municipal administration received good news about the installation of a port for small and recreational boats with state funds.

Representatives of the Ministry reported on the completion of the technical documentation, therefore it is expected that in about two or a half years Klaipeda will repay the 16-year port debt – a new boat dock has been built.
