According to V. Adamkus, President G. Nausėda can only be happy to have the opportunity to implement his ideas and views.
“I don’t think the former left was very favorable to the thoughts expressed by the president,” V. Adamkus told Eltai on Monday.
The president does not hide his satisfaction that the right-wing parties come to power when Lithuania has not emerged from the political well for some time. In particular, emphasizes V. Adamkus, the results achieved by the liberals are gratifying and optimistic.
President, how do you rate the results of Sunday’s elections to the Seimas? Which, in his opinion, has caused the shift from the center-left to the right, which has been in power for the last eight years.
First of all, congratulations on the process itself. It seems to me that Lithuania has shown its democracy and has spoken clearly on the political line. I am delighted with the emergence of new parties and political forces. Personally, I am pleased that the line for our political future has shifted to the right. Be that as it may, the current situation created by the Government has no longer satisfied many people, which has been the subject of much debate. Therefore, a democratic procedure was needed to change things. That is what happened. The election made a very clear distinction between the two existing political lines. I am especially pleased to see the rise of the Liberal Movement. The Liberal Movement played a very important role in the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and at some point it almost disappeared from the political horizon.
This victory for the Liberal Movement gives me hope that this party will regain some weight among our main parties. And all the liberals, who were divided many years ago by personal ambitions difficult to justify … It was a liberal tragedy. And today we are already seeing new and patriotic faces.
But, President, the Freedom Party has also split from the Liberal Movement … It seems that the last split of the Liberals was not a great tragedy, since both parties behaved very well.
I believe that the Freedom Party and the Liberal Movement will certainly create the necessary new force. Probably more than one party will join this complex.
You mentioned creating a welfare state. Current President Gitan Nauseda has spoken extensively about the welfare state. There are those who say it may be difficult for the president to pursue this vision because the welfare state is more of a center-left keyword, and the right will be in power after all. Won’t it be a challenge for President Gitan Nausėda, who even mentioned earlier that the welfare state narrative will somehow be resolved by passing the ministers?
It seems to me that President Nausėda may be really happy to have the opportunity to implement his ideas and his views in Lithuanian life. However, I hope that the right wing, which has become even stronger today, will allow the President to implement his programs. I don’t think the first left was very supportive of the ideas expressed by the president. The positions have clearly changed and, in my opinion or even believe, we will eventually be able to bring the state back to prosperity. Be that as it may, it must be admitted that we have fallen into a certain political pit from which we have had a very difficult time.
And you, President, when you say that we are in a well, you are talking about the political situation in Lithuania in general or the crisis caused by the pandemic in particular, and how the current ruling majority has approached it.
Of course, some manifestations of a pandemic, especially the onset, can be assessed and underestimated in various ways. Perhaps there were difficulties. However, I want to emphasize that due to the dedication of our doctors and our entire society, the pandemic has been brought under control. Although in the first steps a series of errors were made both in the decisions of the Government and in the attitude of our society. I think we will get through the second wave.
What do you think will be the future relations of the Presidency with the new executive majority?
The government will likely be led by Ingrida Šimonyė, and the coalition in the Seimas will be led by Gabrielius Landsbergis. In his opinion, the current culture of communication between the rulers and the Presidency will change.
Outgoing President Dalia Grybauskaitė emphasized that the “peasants” did not always treat the Presidency with respect. Apparently, the constant reproaches expressed by Mr. Ramūnas Karbauskis to Nausėda’s top advisers are also significant. You also think that there was no respect, does all this now have reason to change?
I would not leave the relationship (problems – ELTA) with the president only to individuals. I think it was quite difficult to look at the combination of the party (“campesinos” – ELTA) (to maintain good relations – ELTA). I think this has caused tension on several issues. Now I see a much more positive situation than we had before. And at the same time, I believe that we will try to unanimously get out of all difficulties. New faces are coming, with new visions on some issues of the inner life. This will also strengthen the Government and its ties with the President.
What are the main challenges for the forces seeking to form power?
I don’t want to guess. I still want to see the main personalities. I see myself positive, I know many faces from existing parties. But guessing how things will come together is very difficult. Because it is about internal negotiations.
