After starting the inspection, the inspectors found that it was industrial wastewater entering the rain gutter and flowing from the territory of AB Grigeo Klaipėda. According to preliminary data, this may be due to unsustainable technology solutions.
“Grigeo AB’s repeated actions, which cause significant damage to nature, must be evaluated, and damage to the environment must be remedied as soon as possible. The repeated infractions indicate that the company must make not only declarative decisions, but also real ones that prevent such events.
This is exactly what I will talk about with the leaders of this company next week. We must have principles to protect our nature from pollutants, so solutions must be effective. The company has to put its wastewater treatment in order, otherwise there are sanctions, in extreme cases closure ”, says the Minister of the Environment Simonas Gentvilas.
AAD inspectors report that the investigation will continue until it is determined why industrial wastewater entered the Curonian Lagoon and damages to nature were assessed and compensated.
Next week, the Minister is organizing a meeting with AB Grigeo on the repeated violations and the company’s plans to carry out a primary treatment of wastewater on the territory of its plant in Nemuno str. In Klaipeda.
Grigeo Klaipeda announced that it had stopped the release of industrial wastewater into the environment
On Tuesday, Grigeo Klaipėda discovered and eliminated a temporary technical fault, due to which a small amount of industrial wastewater entered the storm water networks operated by Klaipėdos ūdens and, through them, into the Curonian Lagoon.
“We quickly stopped the entry of circulating technological water into the environment for 2-3 hours. We work closely with environmentalists to determine the circumstances of the incident and the amount of wastewater entering the environment. According to preliminary data, it shouldn’t be big, ”says Paulius Sereikis, Technical Director of Grigeo Klaipėda.
On July 20, after receiving a notification about the sewage observed in the Curonian lagoon, Grigeo Klaipėda together with environmentalists urgently carried out a thorough inspection of the entire infrastructure of the company. It was established that due to a temporary technical failure, industrial waste entered the storm water networks operated by Klaipėdos ūdens and entered the lagoon through them.
According to P. Sereikis, the company cooperates closely with environmental institutions and provides them with all the necessary information. The company also conducts an internal inspection.
