According to Delfi, the lead specialist for the Kaunas Environmental Protection Inspectorate, Konstantinas Šumskas, who is currently on the scene, is not expected to resist the grid of water treatment plants due to the formation of a critical amount of water residual due to rain. After the breakdown of the structure, untreated sewage flooded the company’s production facilities, from which it flowed through the gate into the company’s territory and sank to the ground.
Some of the untreated wastewater is believed to have entered the nearby Nemunas River.
“At the moment, we cannot say how much wastewater has entered the environment.
The accident happened at night, when company employees noticed it and took steps to handle the situation themselves. Pumps were connected that pumped the wastewater flowing into the area back to the treatment plant tanks. It goes without saying that some of them were sucked into the ground and possibly entered the Nemunas.
However, visually, the river water does not appear to be contaminated, the wastewater flow has currently stabilized and emergency response work is underway, “said the environmentalist.
According to K. Šumskas, soil and water samples were taken from Nemunas and will be analyzed. The water company faces a fine.
