“It’s not just a potato field”
The Latin phrase “Qui quaerit, invenit” in the emblem of the Metal Detector Users Club (MINK) only confirmed this rule.
When conducting reconnaissance in the Klaipėda district, metal detectors could hardly expect such incredible success as they expected there.
Arriving in a field under a potato digger near a farmer’s farm, the men went to test a new metal detector, not expecting any special finds.
“An ordinary field with no history, no protected areas around it, permission from the owner obtained – what else can a person whose hobby of leisure listen to what the earth has to do do? Take a closer look at that place,” wrote the search engines on your club’s Facebook.
In a few square meters, the men used metal detectors to capture and collect finds on the surface, including three well-preserved bronze bangles, several bronze coins from ancient Rome, and many other pieces of jewelry.
Searchers also captured deeper signals, making it clear to them that this potato field is not just a potato field after all.
No thieves at all
The men confirmed that they did not delve into the findings set and passed all the available information to the professionals.
“That is the end of the search. The finds surprised the farmer, who had no idea what his land was hiding, and made the employees of the Klaipėda Department of Cultural Heritage (CRD) very happy when they were presented with the findings with the coordinates of the discovery the next day. ” all the compulsory procedures will complement the exhibition of the museum closest to the place, “MINK writes on Facebook.
Gold or silver has not been mined from ancient times.
The archaeological treasure found was not appropriated by metal explorers, but turned over to the officials responsible for such finds.
A new positive practice is emerging, in which state property is placed where it should be.
It is argued that attitudes towards the responsible use of metal detectors are gradually changing precisely because those individual users are not afraid to deliver their findings where needed.
Detectors are not prohibited
Emilijus Petukauskas, director of the Metal Detector Users Club, did not participate in this successful exploration in the Klaipėda district, but he was also very happy with the success of his colleagues.
“The club members have been given permission to look across the farmer’s plowed field, and here is a find. At a depth of less than half a meter. The detectors also have limitations. It also depends on the position of the object in the ground, ”said E. Petukauskas.
The head of the club emphasized that it respects the law, which is why the findings were discovered and handed over to heritage conservationists.
And the Cultural Property Protection Act stipulates that intentional searches for objects of cultural value are prohibited using any search equipment, including metal detectors.
“However, metal detectors are not prohibited for entertainment, the trade in metal detectors is not restricted. And when looking for entertainment, you do not know what can be found on earth,” said E. Petukauskas.
Find expensive jewelry
According to the head of the club, sometimes the finds are very pleasant, surprise and delight the seekers themselves, but they are not ancient, but modern.
What is the most valuable? We have not found gold or silver from ancient times. We mostly find modern jewelry. People lose rings, chains, pendants, earrings while resting in nature. Then they turn to us and ask for help to find it. item to its owner, “said E. Petukauskas.
According to him, there are currently a lot of metal detector users in Lithuania. So, people who have lost some of their valuable jewelry and seek help.
“The prevailing attitude in our club is that we do not ask for or accept any compensation for such arrivals and attendance. It is enough to make people happy. And otherwise our club cooperates with archaeologists and participates in explorations. The last trip of this type was last Saturday in Kernavė, now we are handling material, we systematize it, it should appear on our facebook page in the near future ”, said E. Petukauskas.
Goodwill is beyond question
Laisvūnas Kavaliauskas, the heritage conservationist for the Klaipėda branch of the CRD, has repeatedly encountered black archaeologists, in other words, thieves of historical values.
However, due to the activities of these “children”, who brought a royal treasure to the CRD department from the Klaipėda district farmer’s plowed fields, he is calm.
“They even donated their post to me, ‘Metal Detector Users Club Activities in 2019.’ It’s a very serious print, beautifully bound, presents their club’s findings, describes the places they helped archaeologists in their research I have no doubt about the goodwill of these young people. “In this case, we cannot reveal further circumstances about the location of those latest findings. I think it is a new repository, until now unknown and never studied and probably unexplored, “said L. Kavaliauskas.

The conservationist draws such conclusions from the burials presented by members of the Metal Detector Users Club.
“The finds were found in only one place. It is possible that these are tombs from a tomb from ancient Roman times, which are quite rich. Therefore, we cannot make the place public so that those other ‘wolves’ will not We believe that there are still ancient cemeteries to be discovered in our area, because “We are always informed about individual or more abundant finds. And now we will pass the material received to the Cultural Heritage Center, who must inspect the site in detail,” said L Kavaliauskas.
Then it should be clear whether these are random finds or the location of a still unknown repository.
Soils worthy of attention
The farmer, owner of the field, assured the heirs that he was still finding rubble of brass products while cultivating the land, but throwing it away because he did not find it valuable.
It is true that the owner of the field had already noticed that something was still lurking on his plot.
“Even slag, iron gargoyles, were found at that location, testifying that there may have been some kind of metal processing here as well. It is true that the slag can also be a testimony of a later settlement. They reached the western end of Lithuania via Amber Road, but the locals probably did not use those coins here as money, but as raw material for copper, brass, “said L. Kavaliauskas.
Metal Finders User Club Photo
According to him, the activities of metal detector users should eventually be legalized, but controlled to be reported through clubs or associations that unite them, for which clear rules have been established, where the detectors will visit. Also to present the archaeological finds found.
That would be correct given the current situation.
“In this case, if it weren’t for those young people, we would not have found out about another cemetery, because at first the peasant did not understand what was there, and in the end everything would have been plowed and destroyed”, L. Kavaliauskas is convinced.
