And it secretes mucus, which has many antiviral and antibacterial properties. So, if the amount of this mucus decreases, the mucosa breaks down and excellent conditions appear for both pathological viruses and bacteria to adhere and break the first barrier ”, said D. Rauba.
Practice nasal washes
At the same time, the specialist pointed out that nasal washing is important since part of the pathogen is removed mechanically.
“Even when there is an allergic rhinitis, washing the nose removes some of the allergic particles that are irritating. Therefore, even in this case, attached viruses and bacteria are mechanically removed, thus reducing their quantity and the probability of infection is lower. Furthermore, that amount of virus decreases and the illness can be easier. The mucosa will also be hydrated and the body itself will protect itself ”, explained the specialist.
D. Rauba pointed out that it is not even necessary to buy some preparations at a pharmacy to wash yourself. You can add soda or iodine yourself, even hydrogen peroxide to boiled water, and rinse the nasal cavity thoroughly several times, for example, when brushing your teeth.
Remember to rinse your mouth too
According to the doctor, this is especially important for those who are prone to several colds or suspect that they have had contact with the patient.
The otolaryngologist also urged not to forget to rinse the same oral mucosa:
“It is no coincidence that practically all dental clinics are used to rinse the mouth with various disinfectant solutions, thus reducing the amount of virus in the oral cavity and oropharynx again. So this is another measure that could be taken in such a situation. ”
