Excursions for participants of the “Mechanizmai” energy weekend took place here during the weekend. As the tour groups quickly filled up and everyone couldn’t, we offer a unique opportunity to see how one of the most modern rainwater treatment plants in Lithuania looks and works and how it copes with rainwater before entering the rivers of Vilnius.
The Vilnius relief formed by creeping and melting glaciers, and later by the Neris River, is unique: the old riverbed is lowered by 7 terraces, and the difference in altitudes from the top of the Rokantiškės mound to the river Neris reaches 137 meters. As a result, huge streams of water flow through the rains from the heights of the city, destroying even buildings or entire hills.
The Karoliniškės rainwater treatment plant was built in 1985 and with the growth of the surrounding areas and hard surfaces, it was decided to rebuild it to increase productivity and capacity. This treatment plant also protects the town of Gudeliai, which is a little further down, from floods, as well as controlling pollution and making sure that the rainwater from the rivers arrives clean.
