A sailor who has tamed the heat of the Games lacks wind; maybe a typhoon kiss will help

It will be the third Olympics in Bernot’s career: in 2012 he ranked 12th in London, in 2016 he remained 25th in Rio de Janeiro.

“It is clear that I came to Japan with expectations. I hope it’s better than the London Olympics. So far, it is difficult to predict. They are all well prepared and in good spirits, I think we will soon see how it will be, ”said the Lithuanian Olympian.

As the organizers of the Tokyo Games change the start dates for rowing, worried about the approaching typhoon, surfers, according to him, rub their hands: “I saw the typhoon approaching. “The surfers are waiting for it, we probably have waves, but I doubt the wind will catch us, they probably won’t be able to come.”

We try to discover all the subtleties because the weather conditions are changeable. So far the predictions are that the wind will be weak, which is not good for me. Well, maybe we have that typhoon.

Juozas Bernotas

J. Bernotas and other representatives of the RS: X windsurfing class will have three swims for two days in a row, then, after a day off, they will compete in the same order for two more days. Only the strongest 10 will win a ticket to the July 31 competition.

“There is such a plan to get into the top ten, and we will see how it will be,” said the Lithuanian with a smile. According to him, despite the pandemic, travel restrictions and the lack of training partners it has not been easy in recent years, but he feels perfectly prepared.

Along with all the sailors, Bernot settled not in an Olympic village, but on the island of Enochima, almost fifty kilometers from the main Olympic venues, where the goddess of music and entertainment Bendzaiten is worshiped, according to the reports, they raised the island from the depths of the sea.

“The conditions are good. We have a gym in the hotel, we go to the yacht club, from where we can leave. There are no longer restrictions on the water. It is not very complicated or bad – said the Lithuanian who since July 15 tries to tame the waters of Sagami bay. – We tried to discover all the subtleties, because the weather conditions are changeable. So far, the predictions are that the wind will be weak, which is not good for me. Well, maybe we have that typhoon. Of course it’s hot, but the heat doesn’t bother me, I just want more wind. “

Will the third time at the Games be the last? J. Bernotas does not draw a script, on the contrary, he is optimistic about the upcoming changes in his windsurfing class.

“After these Olympics, the windsurfing class will change: we will have new equipment, new windsurfers with underwater wings. It would be good and good for me, I would also try to make it to the Paris 2024 Olympics. If we fail, we will also have more athletes running for the next Olympics. If I am not myself, I will try to help prepare others to adequately represent our country, ”he said.

When asked if he has already had any adventures during his stay in Japan, Mr. Bernotas says: “This is the question that I am happy to answer, thank goodness no. Everything as planned, there were no surprises. We try to avoid meetings so we don’t get infected and catch the virus. “

Lithuania will also be represented in the sport of sailing at the Tokyo Olympics by Viktorija Andrulytė, who will also start her fights in the Laser Radial class on Sunday.
