As the climatologist Professor Egidijus Rimkus writes in the Lithuanian Universal Encyclopedia, a hurricane is a strong vortex of air with a vertical (usually curved) axis and a very high rotational speed. The air speed inside the vortex that has reached the ground surface exceeds 18 m / s; generally up to 50 m / s; sometimes it can exceed 140 m / s.

A hurricane forms in front of a storm cloud (usually shower balls) with very high volatility from the lower atmosphere (up to 2 km). The diameter of the hurricane varies from a few tens to several hundred meters (sometimes more than 1 km), and the height from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers. Inside, the air usually rotates counterclockwise.

The hurricane moves with the cloud at a speed of 20 to 60 km / h. Duration of existence: from a few minutes to a few hours. The strength of a hurricane is divided into six classes according to the Fujita scale.

The strongest hurricane in Lithuania was registered on May 29, 1981 in Širvintos; the wind speed inside the vortex was about 70 m / s. On May 10, 1985, a hurricane broke out in the vicinity of Nemenčinė, on June 6, 1986, in Birštonas (the wind speed reached 50 m / s).
