Such a powerful earthquake occurred almost ten years after a strong earthquake triggered a tsunami and an accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

No victims of the nightly earthquake in the Pacific have been reported. The earthquake did not cause a tsunami or damage the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant. However, it greatly scared people preparing to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the triple disaster.

“I was at home … Everything was shaking so much that I was really scared for my physical safety,” Masami Nakai, an official from the Soma city municipality in northern Fukushima prefecture, told AFP.

114 people are reported injured in the region and around Tokyo, six of them seriously.

On Saturday shortly after 11 pm (4 pm Lithuanian time) the earthquake was felt in the capital.

Damage caused by a flooded landslide on a highway is currently being assessed.

Eight buildings, mostly residential, were also reported to have suffered partial damage.

Local media reports that dozens of homes have damaged roofs or broken pipes.

Government spokesman Katsunobu Kato warned residents of possible repeat crashes and landslides next week due to the forecast of heavy rain.
