Janis Klovinis, director of the Scientific Council of the Latvian Center for Research and Biomedical Studies, told the BNS news agency that two weeks ago, a Ugandan variant of the coronavirus was detected in three of 192 samples genetically tested. This week, this variant of the coronavirus was found in four of the 96 samples tested. They are all related to the southwestern port city of Liepaja, noted J. Klovinis.

“We are already seeing an increase in this option. Data on COVID-19 [sukeliantį] the virus is still rare, but this strain is considered potentially dangerous because it is highly prevalent in Uganda and is the predominant variant. It is also very widespread in the UK ”, added the expert.

According to J. Klovinis, precautions should be taken because A.23.1 may be more contagious than the original virus variant.

A.23.1 differs from another coronavirus previously discovered in South Africa. The pathogen of the latter strain, also considered more contagious, has not yet been identified in Latvia.
