According to the CEO of LTG Infra, Karolis Sankovskis, from now on rail traffic will resume in the section of the Kaunas Palemonas-Rokai rail crossing, so that all transit and freight trains will circulate again not through Kaunas train station, but bypass, according to the media. report.
Due to contract works, this section will be closed as of December 21, 2020.
“Soon, Kaunas residents and guests will be able to reach the shore of the Kaunas lagoon with a new underground pedestrian tunnel from Ugniakuro Street. This tunnel is one of four new safe pedestrian crossings, which have been installed modernizing the Kaunas railway crossing, adapting it to the needs of the Rail Baltica railway, ”says K. Sankovski.
Previously, there was no pedestrian crossing at the place where the railway is now installed under the railway on Ugniakuro Street; A secure rail crossing point was installed at the request of the Kaunas City Municipality.
The Palemonas-Rokai railway section is intended for transit and freight trains to avoid Kaunas station.
Passenger trains do not run on it, so the construction works did not affect passenger train traffic.
Freight and transit trains were diverted through the Kaunas railway station after the closure of the aforementioned section.
Adapting the Kaunas railway crossing to the needs of the Rail Baltica railway, a total of three tunnels for cars and four underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists have been installed in Kaunas.
This new European standard infrastructure will not only ensure good connections between the parts of the city separated by rail, but will also serve the important purpose of increasing the safety of all road users.
The railway section between Kaunas railway station and Palemonas is one of the most important of the Rail Baltica project: it has already brought a European standard railway from the Polish-Lithuanian border to the intermodal freight terminal in Palemonas.
Currently, all Rail Baltica construction works at the Kaunas railway crossing are on the finish line, after which freight trains will continue to run between Kaunas and Poland towards Western Europe.
