One of the capital’s main streets, Vilniaus Street, will be cleaned of noise and pollution caused by cars. Its section from Islandijos Street to Gediminas Avenue will be open for pedestrians and cyclists from now until the end of the warm season. This solution also offers opportunities for outdoor cafes located on Vilniaus Street.

After announcing new steps in mid-May to reduce car traffic and especially transit traffic in the old town, while encouraging you to visit on foot or by bicycle, the capital’s municipality has named four streets in the old town where car traffic should be kept to a minimum, at least during the warm season. One of those streets is Vilnius. This is one of the first stages in preparing to reorganize the movement in the old town on traffic circuits since the beginning of July.

Until October 1st. on every day of the week traffic movement st. in the section between Iceland and Gedimino ave. will be organized with priority for pedestrians and cyclists. After closing the car access from the Islandijos Street side, on the Vilniaus Street section from the Islandijos Street intersection to the entrance to the inner courtyard on Vilniaus Street. Building 22 will provide only pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the central part of the street (2.5m wide area). With the same principle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be organized in the Vilniaus street section. 7 and 9 houses. Residents will have unrestricted access to their patios through Totorių and Labdarių streets, but strange transportation here will not be desirable.

This transformation is also expected to benefit small entrepreneurs, who are currently going through a difficult phase due to quarantine restrictions. The Vilnius City Municipality has prepared a procedure that allows the installation of outdoor café terraces on the sidewalks of Vilnius Street and, in part, on the street driveway. The principles of cafeteria design and installation are shown in the attached diagram.

Open-air cafes located on Vilniaus Street must meet certain requirements: do not block entrances to buildings, in car traffic zones, cafes must be installed in temporary elevators and protect them from service traffic with fences or decorative flowers , maintain a uniform image of platforms and fences, guarantee the safety of the client and the personnel. Road safety requirements for the installation of umbrellas have also been established.

It should be remembered that the requirements for the residential area are established on Vilniaus Street, where the priority of pedestrians over cars applies.
