I have heard that the Kačėniškės mound is one of the most beautiful, I have also read that a movie is worth watching, so after learning about the recent construction of the Kačėniškės mound towards it, I prepared myself for the Sirvėtai regional park. High hills, deep ravines, long sinuous ridges and cliffs are an exceptional value of the regional park, and Česlovas Kudaba was especially interested in the Švenčionys highlands here. Describing the rolling hills in a picturesque and loving way, he explained the work done by the melting glaciers, the results of which we can enjoy today.

Dundu on a gravel road from Šventa to Ceikiniai, just where the Švenčionys plateau is characterized by the most pronounced diversity of the earth’s surface and where the highest ridges are separated by two river basins. In Kačėniškės village there is an arrow pointing to the side of the mound, but to visit not only the mound, but also the new cognitive trail, you need to drive a little more. Although the trail is new, Google Maps already knows where it starts and leads to a large parking lot near the town of Garniai.

Starting with an information post on the height of Švenčionys and the Čiūlėnai Geomorphological Reserve that protects its highest ridge, the trail plunges through the forest of young pine trees in the forest with no markings, arrows, or route plans. The stairs and bridges, which still smell new, as well as the nature adorned with multi-colored rings, are pleasant from the first steps.

The path, making its way through the hills, rises upward, then descends again until it descends to one of them from the forest to the high swamp that has opened before their eyes, through which, floating like the Tree Crown Trail, a floating bridge is built.

If in the past wetlands were primarily associated with negatives, after regional parks installed educational trails and opened them up to visitors, wetlands became especially popular and visited. While walking through this high swamp, you even forget that behind another hill is one of the most beautiful mounds in Lithuania, which is bathed from the east by the waters of Mergežeris, and from the south and east by another swamp, this once, low swamps.

Here it is, the mound of Kačėniškículos, about the origin of the name of which there is a legend that the houses were supposedly driven and embittered next to the castle that was here. They were mainly occupied by people from the Ruthenian region, who called themselves “kačevnik”. Thus, the shelter where the “Kačevniks” stayed was called “kačevniškės”, which eventually became Kačėniškės.

The mound is not the highest point in these areas, but the location of the elongated hill, which stretched for about half a kilometer and from north to south, determined that people settled here in ancient times. For several hundred years, the settlements at the foot of the mound were inhabited by people who ran towards the castle built on top of the hill only in danger.

Now people are not copying the mound on the mound but are drawn to the picturesque landscape.

Instagram At the bottom of the mound granted by the images, the waters of Mergežeris turn blue. Legend has it that there was a farm on the lake shore where three sisters lived. Once they were drowned, which sometimes makes the ice on the lake turn red. He says: “Don’t go, don’t go”, there you say. Here, three girls drown. If children swim, it would be very hateful to drown … “

The hike to the top of the mound takes longer. Not because this section is long, just walking on the path installed at the top opens more beautiful images than the others, because many visitors lose their sense of time and admire the images or simply enjoy being here and now.

Along the mound, the trail leads to the top, where a steep staircase descends to the lake shore and leads to the parking lot with a wooden boardwalk, as if completing the route of the new nature trail rich in beautiful natural views. It is an ancient site located next to the mound, which is separated from the new one by a distance of about 800 meters. The total length of the Kačėniškės Mound educational trail is about 2 kilometers (round trip), but even if it is not long, it is really scenic.
