The fire on Saturday afternoon, 129 kilometers from the western city of Herat, has largely been extinguished. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of such a massive fire.

“We have been told that between 100 and 200 machines have been destroyed, but that number could be higher. We need time to assess all the damage,” said Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor of Herat.

He said the fire affected about 20 people who are being treated at the hospital.

Videos appearing on social media show huge columns of fire and thick black clouds filling the sky.

The Finance Ministry says that according to initial reports, a car initially caught fire and then the fire spread, causing “huge financial losses”. A delegation has already been dispatched from the capital, Kabul, to investigate the circumstances of the fire.

Washington has allowed Afghanistan to import oil and gasoline from Iran, despite US sanctions on that country.

Farhad also reported that Taliban militants attacked a nearby security post shortly after the fire.

There has been a recent rise in violence in Afghanistan, despite peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government that began in September, during which no progress has been made so far.
