The ship’s nuclear reactor, fuel and weapons were removed from the ship five months ago in preparation for repairs and renovations, so the fire did not endanger them, an official with the regional maritime service said. The service reported on Twitter that the smoke from the scene was not radioactive.

The incident took place aboard the Perle, the last of six Ruby-class nuclear submarines attacked by France. It was put into operation in 1993, the source said.

All workers and sailors aboard the submarine standing at the naval base in the Mediterranean port city of Toulon were safely evacuated, the official added. According to reports, there were about 40 people on board.

The fire broke out around 10 a.m. 30 minutes. places (11 h 30 min Lithuania) at the bottom of the arch which is difficult to reach on time. The army said there could be significant material damage.

The local newspaper Var-Matin has published photos showing white smoke rising above the port. The report says that some people were evacuated through underwater torpedo shells.

Local firefighters are assisted by about 30 specialized naval firefighters. Five hours after the fire broke out, it was not yet extinguished, the official said.

The Defense Ministry has announced that its boss, Florence Parly, will visit the scene “as soon as conditions allow.”

Perle arrived in Toulon in January in preparation for the start of a year and a half of renovations.

The ship, with a crew of 70 sailors and a draft of 300 meters, is designed to track other ships, accompany aircraft carriers, perform coastal intelligence tasks, and transport special forces equipment.

In addition to the six attack submarines, France has four more strategic nuclear submarines armed with nuclear ballistic missiles.
