Andrei Kirilenka, president of the Russian Basketball Federation, does not believe that Lithuania can be called a basketball country.
The former basketball player claimed that the Lithuanian basketball school has raised only one NBA-level player for the past decade: Jonas Valančiūnas.
“Everyone mentions Lithuania as an example, which is a basketball country. However, name at least one player for me without Jonas Valančiūnas, who would be Lithuanian, not an American product and would have been competing stably in the NBA for the last ten years, “said A. Kirilenka.
Domantas Sabonis continues to be successful in the NBA, but grew up as a basketball player in Spain.
He also sees a problem in Serbian basketball.
“It just came to our attention then. Basketball is the number one sport there, but they have another problem: their basketball players don’t play for their country’s teams,” said A. Kirilenka.
