A. Jakubauskas fired from LGGRTC: Lithuania and the center are often under pressure from Israel and Russia to investigate their history

On Friday, the last day of his job at LGGRTC, A. Jakubauskas held a press conference. As stated in the press release, due to the false information spread in the Seimas during the discussion of its topic.

You can watch the broadcast of the press conference here:

A. Jakubauskas explained that he had called a press conference to say what he had not been able to say on Thursday at the Seimas.

He said he became the target not because of leadership issues, but because he refused to succumb to political pressure without scientific evidence to previously convict participants in the June 1941 uprising.

“Recently, both observers and ruling politicians in the media have unequivocally expressed the expectation that my removal and further changes at the center should lead to the abolition of status, titles and the perpetuation of partial resistance. There is talk. obviously from LAF (Lithuanian Activists Front 15 minutes), The June uprising and the interim government, which is a long-term goal of Russia’s historic policy, “said the dismissed LGGRTC head.

According to A. Jakubauskas, many commanders of the future partisan war also participated in the resistance in 1941. The condemnation of one of them is also the condemnation of the other. He claimed that LGGRTC had been pressured for a long time to do so, but never disagreed with him and that was supposedly one of the main reasons for addressing it.

A. Jakubauskas stated that LGGRTC is becoming the object of criticism in the international media. According to him, Lithuania and the center often face pressure from Israel and Russia, how they should study their history, evaluate one or the other of their historical characters.

Meanwhile, the prosecuting states did not hand over to the Lithuanian justice any person suspected of genocide against the Lithuanian nation in Lithuania. I can mention such famous KGB figures who fled Lithuania, such as Nachman Dušanskis, Aleksandras Slavinas, Petras Raslanas and others. So I want to ask, is justice to be done that way? I don’t think so, ”said the fired LGGRTC head.

It is true, he said speaking today as a private person, a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania. A. Jakubauskas assured that when he assumed the leadership of the LGGRTC he was surprised by the criticism, the visits of some diplomats, the rhetoric of his discontent and certain accusations.

“Critics of the center often explain that the center pays more attention to the Soviet period than to the Nazi period and conclude that the center treats both occupations unevenly. I can answer this as follows: the Nazis had occupied Lithuania for three years and the Soviet occupation lasted sixteen times longer: 48 years. On the other hand, the Nazi occupation and crimes were investigated during the Soviet era, to which the KGB paid considerable attention. Meanwhile, the Soviet occupation began to be investigated only after the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Lithuania.

Therefore, there are many more white dots in this historical period, and I would like to remind the lovely journalists that a couple of weeks ago we met with the president of the Lithuanian Jewish-Litvak community and covered most of the topics mentioned here. And this was the first official meeting in the 30 years of LGGRTC’s existence, “he said at a press conference.

A.Jakubauskas also spoke about Jonas Noreikas-General Vėtra. According to the dismissed head of the LGGRTC, for some he was a hero, a fighter against the Soviet occupation, for others, an accomplice of the Nazis who carried out the massacre of Jews during the war.

In his opinion, to understand the truth it is necessary to know well the geopolitical context of that time. After the Molotov-Ribbentrop Law, after the occupation of Lithuania by the USSR, as A. Jakubauskas explained, the majority of Lithuanians thought that the Germans could save them from the Soviet genocide. And most of the Jews who fled to Lithuania and our country from Poland thought that their salvation was in the USSR.

Later, they both realized the mistake. However, we still feel these historical contradictions to this day, ”said the dismissed LGGRTC head.

Speaking of J. Noreika-General Vėtra, A. Jakubauskas stated that the Germans did not recognize the independence of Lithuania and that the administrative structures created by the Lithuanians were in an ambiguous position. On the one hand, he did not have all the power and was obliged to carry out German instructions. On the other hand, by remaining in the local government structures, the Lithuanians were able to further sabotage unfavorable German requests.

“Nororeika found herself in this situation,” he said, recalling that this ambiguous figure had been imprisoned in the Stutthof concentration camp for his anti-national activities.

There are stormy debates in the Seimas

On Thursday, the Seimas removed A. Jakubauskas from the position of head of LGGRTC.

In a secret ballot, 79 parliamentarians voted for his resignation, against four, one ballot was damaged, the BNS news agency reported.

The “peasants” who fiercely defended him called for a vote an agreement with an incredulous person, at that time the representatives of the ruling government said that there was no agreement – A. Jakubauskas simply went wrong.

At the Seimas, a group of supporters of A. Jakubauskas protested outside the stormy debates at the Seimas, during which calls to repentance were heard.

“It just came to our knowledge then. The problem was that,” commented A. Jakubauskas, quoted by BNS, on the decision of Seimas.

After his resignation as head of LGGRTC, he promised to return to academic activity.

“I am a member of the academic community, a professor, I will investigate what has not yet been investigated, I will write books that have not yet been written,” he said.
