Afghanistan’s National Security Directorate said on Twitter that Egyptian Abu Muhsin al-Masri, believed to have held the second highest position in the group’s “unity” in India, was killed in Ghazni province.
The Directorate did not provide further information on the operation and its timing.
AM al-Masris, also known as Husam Abdo-al-Ra’uf, is on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) list of the most wanted terrorists.
His arrest warrant was issued in the US in December 2018 after he was charged with providing support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization and plotting to kill American citizens, the FBI said.
The death of AM al-Masri was announced at a time when peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government are continuing in Qatar to end their long war.
The negotiations are taking place after the United States and the Taliban signed an agreement in February under which the militants agreed not to allow foreign extremists to operate on Afghan soil.
The refuge of the Taliban authorities in Al-Qaeda was the main cause of the American invasion of Afghanistan after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
