Police officers in the Šalčininkai district report that they are constantly responding to reports from residents about illegal trade in excise goods and, following a thorough investigation, have organized a police action.
During the search, agents found 6,260 cigarette packages without the Republic of Lithuania stamps in the luxurious 52-year-old two-story house and auxiliary premises at the Šalčininkai hideout, and their customs value was about 22,000 euros. Several thousand euros suspected of income from criminal activities were also found.
This “point” of the tobacco trade in Šalčininkai has been operating for a long time, and officials have not yet been able to prove the suspect’s guilt. The estate of the suspect Šalčininkai was surrounded by a massive fence, video surveillance cameras were installed around it, and smoking hiding places were installed in the house and ancillary facilities.
During the search, not only smokers and money were found, but also lists of debtors, personal data of strangers and other material that proves the guilt of the suspect in the crime. It appears that he carefully recorded the proceeds of crime.
A pre-trial investigation has been started on the illegal disposal of excise goods (Article 199², paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania). The suspect was arrested and detained. He faces a fine or a prison sentence of up to eight years.
