Tonight at 3.50 am, information was received that a small 30-meter-long ship, Ole Wilassen, had started to sink in the River Dane near the castle harbor. To prevent a possible entry of pollutants into the river and the port’s water area, the Port Authority ship “Zunda” closed the ship with bonnet barriers, subsequently additional absorbent bonnets were built, “the report read.
According to the Port Authority, the fishing vessel leaned dangerously along the river bank, but was not harmed, people were not injured. The reasons for the sinking of the ship have not yet been identified.
“All responsible institutions, environmentalists, representatives of the Klaipėda municipality, the captain of the Klaipėda castle harbor have been informed about the incident. The shipowner is obliged to take charge of the sinking of the ship ”, the report indicates.
As the temporary captain of the Klaipeda Castle harbor, Tautvydas Malinauskas, informed BNS on Sunday, the situation is currently under control.
“The pollutants are a bit spilled, but everything is fenced off. No pollutants were spilled in the water area of the port. The ship is sitting in the background. The owners are informed, they have arrived and they are looking for a solution, how to solve this situation, how to put the boat in order, remove the water and remove it to repair it somewhere ”, he said.
According to T. Malinauskas, it is not yet clear why the ship began to sink.
“It just came to our notice then. We need the divers to come and see what happened there,” explained the temporary captain of the Klaipeda Castle harbor.
According to Arūnas Malinovskis, head of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Communications Division, environmentalists are currently investigating whether there has been any damage to the environment.
“If environmental damage is found, it will be assessed and the shipowners will have to pay for it,” he told BNS.
Ole Wilassen is a historic Norwegian boat built in 1948. The fishing boat was repaired in Klaipeda a couple of years ago.
