A day without a car in Klaipeda was marked by a sad tragedy: a minor died

On Tuesday morning a terrible tragedy began for the family who lived in Slengiai: a 14-year-old son of Slengiškis, who was riding a scooter to school, died under the wheels of a car. All this was seen by his father, who was driving behind him. The disaster occurred on a special day in which Lithuanians were urged to stop traveling by car and move in other ways.

The child died instantly

The traffic accident was reported yesterday at 8.07. At that time, in Slengiai, there is always a queue of cars driving towards Klaipeda.

The teenager took a scooter from Bertuliškės street, where he lived.

You probably hoped to safely cross one of Smeltait’s lined streets in one of the traffic lanes, drive to the sidewalk pedestrian and bike path, and ride a scooter to school.

The boy was led by his father after the boy.

As the driver who saw the incident later said, the boy did not even turn his head to see if the car was not coming from Klaipeda.

The 36-year-old man driving the truck may not have been careful enough either. He, of course, did not expect a teenager to suddenly hit the streets.

At the intersection of Bertuliškės and Smeltaitės streets, a scooter and a car collided.

Witnesses to the incident assured that the boy died immediately. Upon arrival, the ambulance doctors determined the death of the minor.

Washed the blood

“The blow was such that when I was at home I listened and even hit. It was as if someone had hit me very hard in a metal box. The image I saw was horrible. “His father screamed in pain, not in his own voice, he hit the cars with his fists. My mother ran away. I heard her scream for not letting her son ride the scooter.”

Witnesses said the boy did not have a helmet or other protections.

This is a real tragedy. I was there myself, it was very difficult.

In jargon, as in all settlements, the speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour.

The speed at which the SUV was driven will be determined by accident investigation officers.

According to preliminary data, the driver was sober and was detained by the police. Subsequently, the car was transported by a special machine.

With a strong jet of water, rescuers washed the boy’s blood from the road, a stain that marked the spot where the car hit the teenager.

Police and firefighters continued to work at the scene for about three hours, and queues of cars formed.

Use registry

“It is a real tragedy. The officers had to record the circumstances of the accident at the time the parents were feeling the pain of loss at the scene of the accident. I was there very strong. Although in such cases we do not usually leave anything” , – opened Mindaugas Džermeika, the Chief of the Highway Police of the Klaipėda County Police Chief’s Commissariat.

A police psychologist was called to the scene to provide assistance to the spouses who lost their child.

The parents of the dead child asked the officers to carry out a thorough and objective investigation.

The investigators of this accident are likely to be aware of all the circumstances, as they have already received a video recorder of the car parked in front of the Bertuliškių street exit in traffic.

Police officers will be able to provide this material to technical inspection specialists, which will help determine the speed of the car. Only then will it be possible to talk about who is to blame.

People who ride skateboards have been a growing headache for car drivers in recent years.

Officially, this vehicle is equated to a bicycle, but “scooters” very often do not stop at junctions, they appear suddenly when drivers no longer have time to stop.

Those under 18 must wear helmets, just like bicycles.

The scooter won the race

As by the way, Tuesday was a car-free day.

On that occasion, the “Klaipedos Passenger Transport” company and the Klaipeda University Student Union organized a traditional race with seven vehicles through the city.

7.30 a. M. At the same time, the students went on the run by bus, shuttle taxi, internal combustion engine car, electric car, electric scooter, bicycle, and on the run from Smiltelė stop to Klaipėda University, Herkaus Manto str. 84.

This race was won by a student on a scooter.

A few minutes later, news of the disaster in Slengi reached the port city police officers and their commander M. Džermeikas.

Did another child suffer?

People living in slang spoke on the spot of repeatedly asking for a crosswalk at the exit of the street, but there was no rush to do so because the crossings are a few tens of meters on one side and the other.

Perhaps the crossing would have forced the driver to slow down and take a closer look to see if a person was going to get out of parked cars or roll around with a scooter.

Slengiai residents assured that Smeltaitės street is very busy, not only has many cars.

The small bridges that cross the gutter at the side of the road testify that people tend to cross the street not from the crossing, but directly from their homes.

Residents often see another child running down the street near the scene of the tragedy, while their friends live across the street.

There are many crossroads and hills that limit speed on Smeltaitė street, but this does not sufficiently protect people from traffic accidents.

Just a couple of days ago, another incident occurred a few hundred meters from the scene of Tuesday’s traffic accident. On Sunday at 5:44 pm, a 10-year-old boy got off the road on his bike and got under a car.

According to locals, the affected minor is still in a coma.

Drove intoxicated

On September 22, a car-free day, another accident occurred in Klaipeda, in which two cars were involved.

Before noon, on the turn to New Ferry on Minijos street, Škoda and BMW cars collided.

One of them circulated through Agluona, the other along Calle Minijos.

The crossing is regulated by a traffic light, so there is a suspicion that one of the drivers finished or started the maneuver too quickly.

The Škoda Octavia was driven by a 71-year-old man. The alcohol meter showed that the person was drunk: 1.15 avg.

Traffic police officers are asking for the help of witnesses to the incident or asking people with a video recording to respond.

There was nothing to be done for the paramedics in this accident. Drivers were rescued by airbags.

It is true that the drunken old man was ill, but the doctors gave him the necessary help on the spot.

Congestion formed in both streets, the queue of the line extended to the beginning of Minijos Street.

There was a team of firefighters working at the intersection: they had to clean up the car debris scattered on the street.
