An elderly patient with various illnesses was admitted to the Freiststadt clinic in a city near the border with the Czech Republic, according to the report. The diseases affected the patient’s legs in such a way that the left had to be amputated, Reuters reported.
“We are very shocked that on Tuesday, May 18, despite numerous quality approvals, the 82-year-old man was amputated with the wrong leg,” the clinic said, adding that on Thursday morning an error was noticed when changing bandages.
It turned out that the mistake was made just before the operation, when marking which leg to amputate, the clinic reported.
“Unfortunately, the error that removed the right leg instead of the left was caused by a sequence of accidents,” the report said, adding that the circumstances of the incident will be investigated and the standards revised.
Psychological help was offered to the patient. He will still have to undergo another operation to remove his left leg from the middle of his thigh.
“The operation is planned soon,” the clinic said.
