The people in question are Rolandas Jarmalvičius and Rita Martinkienė (both over 40 years old). Their bodies were found Sunday at a home in Belterbet, County Cavan.
The results of the autopsy and the toxicological study are still awaited. Both people are newcomers from Lithuania.
They have lived in the mentioned area for about 6 years.
According to the Irish radio station RTE, the police cannot explain the circumstances of their deaths, but according to one version, the accident could have been caused by accidental poisoning.
R. Jarmalvičius’ brother, Darius Jarmalvičius, noted that his brother came to Ireland with the prospect of a better life and evaluated Kavan positively, reports independent.ie.
Almost 7 years ago, when I was in Ireland, the couple did not speak English at all.
They soon found work in an egg packing company. The couple had no children in common, but R. Martinkienė was the mother of two adult children born to a partner previously in Lithuania.
“Roland and Rita came to Ireland about 6-7 years ago. Before that, they had known each other in Lithuania for several years,” said the brother of the man who died under unclear circumstances.
“When they arrived, no one spoke English, so they tried to learn the language, save some money and create a better life,” Jarmalvičius continued.
“They considered Ireland to be a more promising country than Lithuania,” he said.
“Since we haven’t seen them in a few days, we decided to visit the house yesterday, but we didn’t find any. Later a relative tried to look out the window and thought he saw something. He said he saw their feet. Irish police investigating the incident will have to await the results of the toxicological investigation, which will show whether they may have been poisoned, ”said D. Jarmalvičius.
No signs of theft could be identified. Although the investigation has only just begun and it is difficult to say something specific, according to a version that is being considered, the death of the Lithuanian emigrants may have been caused or induced by unintentional poisoning.
We managed to find out that before death, the couple drank at home.
No obvious injuries were observed on the corpses. The direction of the examination could only be clarified after receiving the autopsy results.
The house where the bodies were found is small, old-fashioned, with several outbuildings. It is located near the border with Northern Ireland.
This mountainous area is dominated by crops and wooded areas. There are not many houses.
Yesterday, the brother of the late Mr Jarmalavičius and several members of his family went to the scene of the incident to speak with the police.
They visited the house after the bodies of the dead were taken to the hospital for an autopsy at the initiative of the police.
According to the neighbors, the Lithuanians were friendly and calm people.
