The shower of meteorite passages is currently taking place, so this weather is especially favorable for enthusiasts of observing the sky and those with good technique can capture spectacular images. However, it is also worth raising your eyes to the sky to see others.
The meteor shower occurs when the Earth crosses the path of a comet
According to Linas Šmigelskas, director of the Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology, there will be a peak of stellar rain in the coming nights.
“It’s practically happening right now, it’s only about 12-13 days of peak, peak traffic. Afterwards, you can still see the rest of August. The shooting star shower starts in late July and peaks around night. from August 12 to 13 and gradually decreases, “explained L. Šmigelskas.
The specialist also explained why the meteor shower is currently observed: the Earth is crossing the path of the ancient comet, which is why we see many shooting stars:
“At that moment, moving with our planet Earth in our orbit, we crossed the ancient path of Comet Swift-Tatly, and on that path the comet has left a trail of dust, a strip of dust. When the Earth crosses the path of the ancient comet, that dust enters our atmosphere, it ignites at an altitude of 80-100 kilometers and we see many shooting stars. “
During this meteor shower, we see overflows that fall, but there are many such flows, says the director of the Museum of Ethnocosmology: we can observe orionids, lyrids, ursids and other meteors.
“They have those names because the radiant, the point from which the shooting stars emanate, the meteors are in that constellation. According to the Latin name of the constellation, the shooting star streams are also called,” explained L. Šmigelskas.
However, the expert points out that now we see more shooting stars, but we can also notice them any other day. It is even estimated that one micrometeorite falls per square meter per year, so in theory there is some stardust in each of our houses. It also happens that in Lithuania there are fragments of meteorites that have reached Earth.
Choose a suitable location for follow-up
However, not every night is conducive to observing the meteor shower. L. Šmigelskas says that cloudy nights have the most footing. On the other hand, many things these days can be seen online, without exception and meteor shower.
“Unfortunately, Lithuania is in a place where there are not many clear nights and the worst is cloudiness. If clouds cover the sky, unfortunately we will not see the shooting stars with our own eyes. But today there is the Internet, we can find broadcasts where astronomy and sky lovers capture those flashes of shooting stars and can, at least indirectly, admire this phenomenon ”, said the director of the Museum of Ethnocosmology.
However, the specialist emphasizes that the corner of Lithuania from which you will observe is not important, because the area of the country is small, but if you managed to get a clear and clear night, it is worth remembering a few more tips. to make the observation enjoyable and see as many shooting stars as possible:
“It would be good if there was no Moon at that time, especially the situation is aggravated by the full moon, because it illuminates the whole night. And, without a doubt, the light of cities and roads. If a person wants to see and admire this phenomenon, he should see when there will be a maximum of shooting stars, as publicly announced, then go to a more remote place, preferably more open, not surrounded by forests, trees and far away. lighting. You shouldn’t have a light source with you, turn off your phones temporarily, or put them in your pockets. “
The best time to observe stellar shower begins about an hour or a half after sunset, and it is best to look at the sky until 3 o’clock, because when you start to shine the phenomenon will no longer be so clearly visible.
L. Šmigelskas also recalls that you don’t actually need a telescope for observation: its area is small, so the probability of seeing a shooting star is lower. All you need is warmer clothes, good company, and a hot drink. You will have enough eyes to look, and if you really want to, you can bring your binoculars.
