Often patients see doctors after leaving the disease, and this often happens with esophageal cancer. Why does this happen, or do patients feel no symptoms and, as a result, do not understand that they are delayed?
Esophageal cancer, like many other cancers, is clinically silent, says Dr. A. Krasauskas.
In the early stages, cancer does not cause specific symptoms. Often, people notice cancer symptoms only when the senses interfere with life. In this case, patients are diagnosed with a third or (rarely) second stage.
As the doctor says, secondly, the third stage of cancer disease is rarely found, mainly by accident.
“Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to some changes in the body and well-being,” said the chest surgeon.
When it comes to esophageal cancer, patients with it suffer from chest discomfort, especially when swallowing food.
“Even then, you need to see doctors for testing, in this case, the most basic and informative is fibrogastroscopy, which is also done when the stomach is examined,” said the IMI doctor.
– In this case, people apply late, because the swallowing is a little disturbed, the person thinks, perhaps it will pass, he will take medicine, water. And so a month passes, two, three, and when the complete meal can no longer pass through the esophagus, it is even rubbed, the patients are already calling an ambulance, the doctors observe what happened. Then the patient weighs, sees that he has lost 20 or more pounds and that the stage of the disease is already 3-4. This is also related to social problems, especially older men are afraid to see a doctor. If the wife does not grab the handle, does not take it to check, then he will sit in a corner so that she does not touch it. “
The surgeon says that fear of going to the doctors is also related to self-medication.
“They begin to follow the advice of their neighbors, they are supposed to be cured, they do not go to a checkup and it worsens the situation, because it is not clear how and what disease is being treated.” Timely referral provides a better opportunity to detect cancer disease earlier, and the sooner cancer disease is detected, the more effective its treatment and the better the results, ”says A. Krasauskas.
As the doctor said, there are two types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and glandular cancer.
“Squamous cell carcinoma has long been known as a disease among smokers and heavy drinkers in men. In most cases, these patients are exhausted and come to us when symptoms appear, “said the doctor.
As the IMI doctor said when talking to patients, it turns out that they often experience symptoms for half a year or even longer. Only when he feels very bad does he get to the hospital.
“But now there are more and more forms of glandular esophageal cancer, as well as esophageal and gastric junctions.” This form is the scourge of our time because it is caused by malnutrition, i. and. abundant and poorly digested food intake and passivity, i. and. Lie down after eating, says the doctor.
– It promotes irritation of the lower esophagus and causes this cancer. Only in this case, the symptoms appear a little earlier and this type of cancer is operated on more frequently, stages 1-2 are more common. “
As the surgeon said, esophageal surgeries are not done much. In Lithuania esophageal cancer affects around 150 and up to 20 percent. patients can be operated.
We may not feel the symptoms of lung cancer, either. Is it possible to do a little research and what should be done to know the situation of your lungs?
Dr. A. Krasauskas says that very rarely, central cancer, which early compresses the bronchi or causes pneumonia, has symptoms.
“So the main thing when it comes to lung cancer is detection. Special attention is paid to people who are at risk, which is undoubtedly a large number of smokers who work in dusty environments. <...>, working with chemicals, so that screening can detect cancer at an early stage, “said the IMI doctor.
