A car tax can make a difference: warns of fraud, some people wait two ways

Vismantas Baršys, head of the Association of Used Vehicle Dealers, said the new tax could tighten the market a bit.

“Yes, it has changed quite a bit, especially those older cars that would require that tax. People try to make them cheaper and sell. There cannot be a very big change. Sure, there are exports, but after quarantine, it still hasn’t fully recovered. But it is not the case that nobody will buy a car for 3000 euros. There will be two ways: either the person will drive to the ground until they see through the bottom, or they will sell to another export market that does not care at all about their carbon emissions, “he said.

The interlocutor still does not believe that the most popular brands change. According to him, when a person buys an expensive item, those 200 euros are not very fatal.

“I don’t think it will change, because most of the most popular brands are a two-liter diesel engine that emits 120-130 grams, which costs 30-60 euros.” This is certainly not a significant amount that could make a valuable change for the customer and would no longer be purchased. On the other hand, those most powerful cars, the most powerful at the moment, have an 8 cylinder Volkswagen mileage engine that emits around 200 grams. And it is a tax of about 200 euros, but when a person pays a large sum, those 200 euros will not change their decision ”, he considers.

The number of deceived people can increase

When asked if there may be an increase in the number of deceived people, the interlocutor believes that this is the case, but suggests that he is more interested in the system and the calculation.

“I really think it will happen, because there really aren’t a lot of emissions of those grams in cars outside.” Of course, there are ways to verify that. You can search for the car you are buying on the same Internet, so those emissions can be very different from the tires you leave the factory with.

If you come out with the bigger ones, those grams are automatically discarded higher, but there won’t be such a significant difference. It can cost between 180 and 210 euros for the same car, but if a person has time, it is worth taking a look. And the more powerful, the more it casts. As a result, the more powerful can be fooled more, “says the interlocutor.

“Of course, there can always be dissatisfied people. But I really don’t think there are many of them. I think Regitra employees will really need patience, I think it will take time for everyone to understand, “he added.

Parking will change

Quarantine has significantly adjusted the used car market. It is true, as the interlocutor says, summer is not a time when people are in a hurry to change cars.

“The market is back in parts, because the same exports and borders are not yet fully open. There are definitely not as many foreign customers as I would like. Local buyers in May and June actually bought quite actively, and what will happen now July and August will be obvious. There will probably be calmer people. Summer is not the time when people are in a hurry to change cars, if the air conditioning freezes, it usually arrives before autumn, “says the man.

The interlocutor also says that cars imported to Lithuania may be a little better in the future, and people’s attitudes will also change: they will drive a new car longer and take better care of it.

“I think it will definitely matter better. People will buy maybe a little better because they will want to drive for a longer period of time. Now again, they bought cheap cars for 1000, 2000 or 3000 euros. He travels with him for a year and then they leave it somewhere in the province to “drive” to the end. That new registration, since it will cost more to all, the person himself will project in the future that the trips will no longer be for a year, or maybe three, four or more. At the same time, the number of those records will decrease and a person with the same car will drive longer, “he says.

New rate

The tax will not be paid only to vintage car drivers and upon changing the name of the vehicle owner.

The rate ranges from € 13.5 to € 540, depending on the type of car and the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) if it exceeds 130 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

If emissions reach 131-140 grams, the tax will be € 30-540 for diesel cars, € 15-270 for gasoline and € 13.5-243 for gasoline. If CO2 emissions exceed 301 grams, the tax will be € 540 (diesel), € 270 (gasoline) and € 243 (gas) respectively.

The least polluting cars will cost € 30, € 15 and € 13.5 respectively.

This tax was decided in the Seimas in December 2019, after the adoption of the Motor Vehicle Registration Tax Law. It was originally slated to take effect in January 2020, later postponed to July 1 to give more time to prepare for tax administration.
