Capitol Police (USCP) said the incident occurred at a checkpoint near the headquarters of the United States Congress. The driver of the vehicle was shot and arrested. He was later reported dead.
“The suspect has been detained. Both officials were injured. All three were taken to hospital,” police said in a Twitter message.
Two USCP officials told the AP news agency that the condition of the shooting suspect was critical. One of the injured policemen was taken to hospital by the police and the other by ambulance.
The incident took place in Washington amid continuing high tensions, nearly three months after the violent invasion of the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump, when lawmakers had gathered to confirm President Joe Biden’s victory in the election.
Following the latest incident, the Capitol complex was closed. The employees said they could not enter or leave the buildings.
Police department chief Robert Contee told the media that the incident is not yet linked to terrorism, but the circumstances are still being investigated.
The capitol had begun to open after the January 6 riots, with the latest incident taking place at a site from which traffic barriers had been removed.
The attacked checkpoint is about 90 meters from the entrance to the Capitol on the side of the Senate Palace.
Senators and Senate staff often cross this checkpoint during the week.
Video posted online shows a dark-colored sedan hitting a barrier and a cynologist inspecting a vehicle with a service dog.
At the time of the incident, President Joe Biden had just left the White House to reside at Kemp David. The accompanying member of the National Security Council informed the president of the incident.
