No sharp conflicts
In search of ways to stem the crisis, Interior Minister A.Bilotaitė this week allowed border guards to bring migrants to Belarus, offering to cross the border and request asylum at official border crossings.
The spokesman for the State Border Guard, Rokas Pukinskas BNS, on Wednesday morning did not mention the number of migrants who turned around, only confirmed that more than in the first half of Tuesday. At the time, some 180 migrants were not allowed to cross the border.
15 minutes R. Pukinskas affirmed that the powers granted to the officials were sufficient to guarantee order at the border: “In all cases, the operations were carried out in a fluid and lawful manner, without exceeding the powers currently granted to them.”
The interlocutor added that there were simply no particularly acute conflict situations with migrants in the border sections last day.
Belarus does not comment on the news.
Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė told reporters before the government meeting that everyone knows that a hybrid attack on Lithuania and the provision of such disinformation is an example of how this is done. This is how he answered the question about the information published in Belarus.
The official Belarusian media is already announcing not only that there are beaten migrants on the Lithuanian border, but also a dead Iraqi, who was allegedly found in a very difficult condition by the Belarusian border guards.
This is misinformation that the Belarusian regime is spreading for certain purposes.
“This is misinformation that the Belarusian regime is spreading for certain purposes. I think that these things do not even make sense to comment. …
Now it is not possible to cooperate with the Belarusian side because it is simply not happening. It cannot even happen when Belarusian officials themselves are involved in the process and we have evidence. And what is happening is clear that an attack is taking place against Lithuania. The misinformation that is spreading now is an action against Lithuania. And it makes no sense to comment on it, ”said the minister.
A.Bilotaitė stated that she was sure that in this situation there would definitely be “all kinds of stories created”, so the goal is to compromise the work of the officials and Lithuania itself.
Trust the officials
“The border guards will use force only if it is necessary to use that force. They are professional officials who evaluate all circumstances and each situation and take additional measures only when necessary, which are established by law,” said the Minister.
A.Bilotaitė said he had no information that the agents had needed to use force last day to deliver the migrants: “I trust the agents, they have an operational algorithm, according to which they operate.”
He also assured that all the actions of the Lithuanian side are legal. And let’s see how the situation has changed.
We are sending a clear message that people who want to apply for asylum can do so, but by legal means.
“We are sending a clear message that people who want to apply for asylum can do so, but by legal means. Come to the border checkpoints, apply for asylum and under all procedures, if those people belong, they will be granted asylum.
But not to cross the border illegally, to commit violations and to be a tool of the Lukashenko regime, “said A.Bilotaitė.
If Belarusian officials return the migrants to Lithuania, other actions will be taken, the minister said, without naming specific decisions.
“Our objective is to show that we agree that those who apply for asylum would do so only by legal means,” said A. Bilotaitė, and stated that he did not yet have the information to have an official application of this type.
The minister did not hide that the question of where to house these people is still open, but it is difficult and dangerous to talk about specific places: “It can provoke some provocations. Someone is very interested in hearing some information, organizing something. Trying to initiate and disseminate information. wrong.
The situation is delicate, but we promise that there will be communication both at the municipal level and with the communities, it is important, but decisions will have to be made ”.
Next week, the Seimas will meet for an extraordinary session and the biggest problems are expected to be due to the more active participation of the army in the protection of the Lithuanian border. In addition, to facilitate the processes so that the physical wall is built as soon as possible.
The first about 180 people
As early as Tuesday night, about a dozen migrants were returned and sent back to Belarus.
The first of these cases took place at the Švenčionys border checkpoint, where agents detained more than 10 migrants after cameras captured a group of migrants. With the help of soldiers, they were transported to the border mark and returned to Belarus.
A group of people were also returned to the Padvarioniai firebreak using a dog trainer with a service dog, which remained on the Belarusian side of the bridge for some time. Several other detained migrants returned to Belarus at the Pushki border post.
As the head of SBGS Rustamas Liubajevas said at Tuesday’s press conference, a total of 180 people have not been admitted to Lithuania since midnight on Tuesday. However, 27 other people entered Lithuania, which is, as R. Liubajev named, people from vulnerable groups, no sanctions are applied to them.
