“An investigation into the arson started, no conclusions can be drawn yet, as much investigative work needs to be done, during which new elements can be identified,” said Nantro prosecutor Pierre Sennes.
The fire broke out in the morning at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Cathedral. French television reports showed black smoke running through the main windows between the two towers of the 15th century cathedral. The church was also damaged in a serious fire in 1972.
The fire was observed by residents and tourists overwhelmed on Saturday.
Firefighters reported that the cathedral ceiling had not been damaged and that the fire had already been contained. The people did not suffer either.
Firefighters said the damage caused could not be compared to last year’s fire at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Paris. Suddenly, flames engulfed the roof and peak of the medieval monument, and the building itself almost collapsed.
“The damage was done primarily to the organ, which appears to have been completely destroyed. Its platform is very unstable and could collapse, “General Laurent Ferlay, the region’s fire chief, said at a press conference in front of the Nantes Cathedral.
“After the Cathedral of Our Lady burns Saint Peter and St. Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Nantes. Support our firefighters, who, despite the danger, save this Gothic gem,” wrote President Emmanuel Macron on Twitter.
Prime Minister Jean Castex and Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin will go to Nantes on Saturday afternoon for the fire.
