“By decision of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, soldiers from the Southern and Western Military Districts are conducting unexpected exercises,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a statement.
Almost 150 thousand people participate in the exercise. Soldiers, including paratroopers and marines from the northern and Pacific fleets, more than 400 planes and more than 100 ships, the ministry said. The aim is to test the readiness of the Russian army to ensure “security in southwestern Russia, where a serious terrorist threat persists,” and also to prepare for the Kavkaz 2020 military exercise.
