A. Zagklis came to Palanga to closely watch the bouts of the Hoptrans 3×3 tournament broadcast via the FIBA internet platform.
Organized by the 3×3 Basketball Association led by Rolandas Skaisgiris, the 40-year-old Greek believes that this competition, organized together with LKF and the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), is a good example of how to adapt to the conditions dictated by the coronavirus and fill the sports gap.
“This is a very good example of cooperation between a federation, a league and a private initiative. I hope that from now on other Lithuanian cities want to organize more similar tournaments, ”said the head of FIBA, who held a brief press conference in Palanga on Thursday.
He said he was visiting the national federation for the first time after travel restrictions in Europe were lifted. On Thursday night, A. Zagklis intends to visit the training of the Lithuanian men’s team, which organized a training camp in Palanga.
“Traditional basketball and 3×3 are the same sport, only different disciplines. I am happy that a traditional basketball country like Lithuania discovers more beauty every year in what we consider the best sports in town.
Now we are very close to the sea, we have seen 3×3 sands near the monuments of the most famous cities and similar places. I think the synergy between the different basketball players who helped organize this tournament is a first step and a demonstration of how this discipline is gaining popularity. There will be a moment of our glory in Tokyo, which we are looking forward to, ”said A. Zagklis, considering the 3×3 Olympic basketball debut to be held at the Tokyo 2021 Games.
