However, experts from the Iki retail chain know how to avoid this and reveal several tricks that will help prolong the freshness of seasonal berries.
According to Andrej Pometkas, marketing manager of the aforementioned retail chain, the popularity of berries increases significantly in the summer, therefore efforts are made to offer buyers the widest possible variety, from Lithuanian strawberries to cherries currently very popular.
“Today, shoppers can buy blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, currants, and cherries. We are trying to make all berries readily available in all of our online stores, we are looking for ways to offer you a better price for berry sales to increase. up to 10 times during the season. Now the best sellers are Lithuanian cherries and strawberries, the peak of Lithuanian and Polish blueberries will start at the end of the month, and blackberry sales will generally increase in August, “says A. Pometko.
With such a large variety of berries, you want to enjoy them as long as possible, therefore Vilma Juodkazienė, food expert at the aforementioned retail chain, reveals several tricks that will protect them from possible mold and help spread freshness.
Vinegar and water solution
According to V. Juodkazienė, a simple solution of white vinegar and water kills bacteria and mold spores, which in turn helps the berries stay fresh longer.
Such an approach can help prolong the freshness of the berries for several days and sometimes even weeks. The vinegar removes mold and bacteria, so you can enjoy fresh berries without fear of spoiling quickly, “says the food expert, who gives instructions on how to make a vinegar-water solution.
Step 1. In a large bowl, do a dilute vinegar bath to wash the berries. Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 3 cups of warm water.
Step 2. After washing the berries in this solution, dry them in a strainer and rinse them under cold running water. This will ensure that you don’t feel any trace of vinegar later.
Step 3. It is necessary to dry the berries as thoroughly as possible. You can use a salad dryer or just spread the berries on a paper towel. It is important that they dry completely.
Step 4. Place the dried berries in a sealed container lined with paper towels. Leave its lid slightly open to remove excess moisture. Enjoy the fresh berries!
Alternative methods
According to V. Juodkazienė, if there is no vinegar in the house and the refrigerator is already full of berries, it is possible to try another alternative method that will help to kill bacteria and mold spores.
“A quick bath of hot water is also great if you want to prolong the freshness of the berries. Soak them in 50-60 degrees of water for about 30 seconds. Then dry well and store in the same way as after washing with a vinegar solution, ”says the food expert.
In addition to the aforementioned berry washing methods, there are other methods that can at least slightly extend the life of the berries. According to V. Juodkazienė, some of them are especially simple and most likely used in many houses.
“The simplest rule to follow is not to wash the berries until you plan to eat them. Seasonal berries tend to mold quickly, so storing them from moisture can extend their shelf life. Another important thing: when buying a bag of berries, be sure to check for mold on any of them.
If you find it, be sure to remove the damaged berries or cut the damaged part. The last rule that will be useful is to place the berries in a container as large as possible, line them with a paper towel, cover them with a lid and place them in the refrigerator, “advises the food expert.
